The large gathering of lions were more than capable of bringing down the hippopotamus calf. It seemed as though it truly stood no chance of being able to fight against so many of them that it almost seemed unfair. Unfortunately, lions had to eat and that was exactly what they ate so there would be no avoiding it. Wrong place, wrong time.. as they say. Carina bowed out as soon as it was truly not breathing to allow others the opportunity to eat and carry it back to their own prides. Best not to dabble in politics simply by means of taking a single bite. Carina was absolutely happy to avoid all of that and head back to the Lagoon. exit carina

Well, that was exciting. Zelda could tell that she had clearly worked herself into quite the exhausting state of mind as she slowed her gait once their target was felled. Eyeing it for just a few moments before deciding she would rather leave the strangers to it rather than take anything for herself. It might've been nice, perhaps, but she wasn't at all in the mood to scrap. So she turned herself around and wandered away back through the sandy dunes of the western coast of amaryllis. Not at all bothered by no meal but all the more interested in falling down into the nicest place she could find to nap. exit zelda

She flicked her ears with mild surprise as others came up alongside her. Sedona glanced to her peripherals, quelling the startlement in her chest as the reality of helping paws washed over her understanding. The young lioness only rumbled a low growl of approval in response, her eyes gleaming with determination as they stalked through the boneyard in unison. Whatever they stalked smelled wet, oddly, propping her brow up with simmering curiosity. Then, she saw it: a scampering thing, slick and shining against the midday sun. A hippopotamus calf?

Luckily, Sedona's maternal instincts did not extend to the likes of prey. She could not help but smile at her fortune as she glanced around to the large party that had gathered, searching for signs that they had pinpointed it, too.

"Mind the teeth; they are still deadly," she whispered lowly. Her attention lingered silently on the familiar, rosy frame of her brother – a wordless display of concern. It was all she would allow before taking up their positions. Sedona led as a sprinter, her strides quick and her paws sure upon the barren dust of that boneyard. Her jaws parted in a gasping pant as she ran, corraling the thing with the other sprinters until their more muscled counterparts could move in for the kill. What a show it was! They made quick work of it, silencing its bleating calls for some lost mother with brutal efficiency.

"Thank you for your paws," Sedona panted, slowing to a halt with shaky breaths. Others quickly began taking their share, her chest tightening slightly at the notion of being shorted. Swiftly, she moved to tear at the buffet's shoulder with her needle-like teeth. The oasis would be rewarded for her efforts, above all. Nodding to Tomas through her mouthful of hippo, Sedona turned to carry the morsel shakily home.

For the amount of lions they had, it was a blessing they'd happened upon such challenging prey. At the very least, the sheer vastness of their numbers eased her anxiety about such tough-skinned animals, and as they descended upon the calf and separated it from its mother, even its soft skin seemed to slip through her teeth like butter. The hippos had made a grave mistake abandoning their previous habitat to search for better waters so far in the desert, and the herd could only look on as the lions escaped with their meal. It would be a long trek home, but at least the prize was well worth it.

The hippo falls to them. It ends it blood and ruin. Screams of the prey echo through the valley. Bones shatter beneath Harou's jaws. The crimson stains his lips, dripping down his ivory chest. The blood moistens his fur. It's wet and it feels delicious. He revels in the sensation of blood. He's not really eating his food either, he's mostly playing with it. When Harou is satisfied he gets up and shakes out his bloodied fur. He comes across another boulder and sharpens his talons on it. He seeks to leave quietly then, to continue his running exercise through the terrain.

The hippo makes for a formidable opponent. It's tender flesh yields to his teeth. It feels soft, and delicious, as he tears into the calf. Blood saturates his mouth. It's thick and hot and slides easily across his tongue. He revels in the bloody sensation. His fangs are dipped in so much blood. It collects beneath his chin and trickles down his chest. The prey's screams still echoes in his ears. He always feels thrilled before the chase. Now the hunt dies down, and the gathering begins to thin. He's quiet, as he steps away from the carcass, shaking out his thick mane. He sharpens his talons across a nearby boulder. Then he's off, running in the darkness, continuing his exercise.

the prey they end up tracking is bizarre, strangely out of place this far from water. or, so he assumes there’s no water nearby. the boneyard is dry and barren, but perhaps this hippo calf knew something he didn’t. alas, whatever knowledge it might have died with it — the spirits don’t even have to listen to his prayer, because between all the lions gathered success is a sure thing. still, he tilts his head, eyes slipping closed — murmuring a quiet thank you to the spirits who might’ve listened to him, today. he would not ignore them, lest they shun him later. with the hunt done he would rest only a moment or two before continuing on.

While waiting, Isla would continue to rub against the brush she was standing between, both scratching an itch that annoyed her side while also helping to dullen her scent. Two toned eyes would watch as other joined, @Alexander ♔ being one of them. She'd catch his chuff as a soft smile curled her lips, giving him her own chuff in response. But the time would come to refocus on the hunt when the hippo waddled its way into view. Now what the hell was it doing all the way out here where a source of water was scarce? Surely it was ill or something...

Isla would stalk forward until it were time to act, and as the rest moved she would begin to sprint towards the hippo. The wildcat would keep her wits about her as she continued to sprint in wide circles around the mammal, cutting it off when it tried to dart away. And as it was brought down she would leap onto its back, jaws tearing into the thick flesh. Hungrily, Isla would work on freeing a large chunk of meat for herself, and once she had it she would give the white plush maned lion a look of farewell before she turned and headed away form the group.

As he waits, it's @Teodora who joins him, and he offers her a nasty glare. "I can handle myself, old woman." He insists obnoxiously. A calf comes lumbering into the boneyard, and Viggo idly wonders what it's doing so far out on land. It's likely lost, and it's about to pay the price with its life. It's not long before the group descends on the calf, and he joins them, eager to witness the action. For one so young, it's surprisingly tough, but it falls all the same, like so many before it.

He eagerly joins the group in the feast, wrenching off a piece for himself before pushing through the crowd to leave. He sharpens his claws on a rock, priming them for the journey ahead, before he resumes his exercise, leaving the dismal boneyard far behind.

The creature they'd taken down was one Spark had never seen before. A hippo, he guesses, based on what he'd heard about them before, and it was almost a shame that he could only now observe it amongst the bones it would become. Next time he saw one, he promised himself, he would just observe.
Swiftwillow takes a bite of the creature and waits for him to do the same. Not wanting to be wasteful, he takes a mouthful of his own and goes to follow her. She seems to want to eat isolated from the group, which he can understand, eating with strangers is an odd experience and the haunted landscape doesn't exactly give off a relaxing atmosphere.
Chewing on his piece thoughtfully, Spark thinks about what he's going to tell their family. Knowing Aspen, she probably won't talk about the hunt at all, but Spark doesn't want their encounter with a hippo to go unremarked. His mouth moves a little faster, now eager to get home.
