He nodded and stood in preparation. He'd had plenty of spars lately, though this would be the first in snow. He never anticipated a need to fight against her, but if they ever fought together, it would be helpful to know how the other operated. Besides, a spar was good practice regardless.

He quickly settled into his defenses, stance widened, ears back, and shoulders forward, then braced himself. "You get first hit," he offered. His weight was balanced slightly more heavily into his haunches, giving him more maneuverability on his front end. Still, he knew he may be at a bit of a disadvantage due to the terrain.

He agreed and Ástríðr was pleased with it. Sea foam jewels locked onto his form and sized him up. Her claws dug into the snow covered ground as she turned to face him. There wasn't going to be much room between them, but Ástríðr would figure it out as she pushed herself forwards. Ástríðr would attempt to throw her left shoulder into the center of @Gawain's chest, making herself being further over towards her own right so that her shoulder could properly hit the center piece of his chest. All the while, Ástríðr would also attempt to grab with her jaws on his left shoulder.

Once again, a spar started with a solid hit to the chest and Gawain started to wonder if perhaps he should find a way to strap a tortoise shell there to prevent the regular bruises he had been developing. As frequently as he'd been sparring, it might not be such a bad idea.

He felt teeth at his left shoulder and swung around towards his left. He raised his right foreleg as he did so and, claws outstretched, attempted to strike her at her nearer shoulder and bat her away from his own. Meanwhile, he braced his weight in his hind end to more effectively swivel in whatever direction he may need to. He made sure his ears were carefully tucked away as well, just in case.

Chest connected and bruising formed quickly across the area that made the connection. The breathe was knocked out of her chest momentarily before Ástríðr was able to fix it as her jaws sank into his shoulder. She instantly caught the smell of iron and tasted blood mixed with fur. Not immediately but shortly after, Ástríðr would let go because she wasn't here to hurt her newly found friend but when he swung his right paw out towards left shoulder because that was the one closest to him. Claws hit flesh and a hiss came from her jaws as she would attempt to lift up her left up and attempt to slam it down on top of Gawain's own left paw; the one closest to her at the moment.

He felt his shoulder start bleeding and groaned softly- not because it hurt, but because he knew Eli wouldn't be happy that he was sparring so much. Oh well. There was no time to dwell on it. Soon enough, she let go, freeing his shoulder up without him having to do any further damage.

She trapped his left paw under her own paw, which was... annoying. He attempted to swing his right leg up and over her left shoulder, hoping to push her down and possibly pin her, though he didn't have terribly high hopes about that second goal.

Everything hurt now that she was thinking about it. Though Ástríðr didn't spar as much as Gawain did but it was still a toll on her body. Perhaps she needed to do it more often so that her body got used to it. Ears fell on top of her head as she felt her claws hit his toes but she wouldn't dig into his paw instead Ástríðr moved it so that she didn't do to much damage to her friend. Claws dug into the ground as she would feel a paw go onto her left shoulder with a push, and Ástríðr would allow herself to be pushed down but instead of staying down Ástríðr would attempt to roll away from Gawain and get back on her feet.

Thankfully, his opponent did not dig her claws into his toes like he had worried she might. She released his paw and he was up and ready to go again- tired but not trapped.

He was surprised that he'd managed to push her over, he hadn't thought there was that much force behind his strike. But then she rolled and stood back up, catching him off guard. "Nicely done," he couldn't help but admit. That move impressed him, he didn't think he would have thought of it in the same situation. The spar had reached the natural end now though, both lions still on their feet and facing each other. He dipped his head to her.

Once again she came out defeated but that didn't bust her bubble. Ástríðr did not have an ego like most vikings and therefore when she lost a fight it didn't hit her as hard. @Gawain didn't make a final move and so Ástríðr kept to herself and let her body relax. Ears twisting on top of her head as he seemed impressed with her move and she would chuckle. Not many think of it. Those of larger stature don't usually try that move and though she is large, Ástríðr still used it on occasion. It just took to much out of her sometimes.

Gawan nodded to her, a smile on his face. "I certainly wouldn't have. I'll have to remember it." He had won, sure, but he certainly wasn't going to brag about it. He had more respect for the lioness before him than that.

Once again, he sat down, content to stay in her company a little while longer. "We will make good allies for each other," he mused lightly. She made a good friend and a formidable enemy, and he was certainly glad she was on his side. It had been a narrow win, by the skin of his teeth.

"I'd be happy to spar with you again any time."
