The call for a rank stirred Morrigan from her patrol, but it was a welcome distraction. It meant that others were at least content enough to take rank and do something for the home Avaneira and Morrigan were trying to build. The lioness who called first wasn't familiar by name yet, but Morrigan was pleased to see initiative from anyone who called the Cove home. "A few more months, @Feyre. And you shouldn't be so quick to judge someone you don't know," she chided the young fireball, quickly becoming accustomed to the girl's personality but not blaming the other adults if they were annoyed with her. To @Petra though, she would give her congratulations, as no one had shown up to challenge her claim.

@Sanson had voiced his desire for a rank out loud and he was here today to claim as much, and Morrigan waited to see if anyone would give him a fight. If not, she would be happy to call him Baron. "Congratulations, Gentry. I would call you by name but I don't think we've gotten that far. I'm Morrigan, Sovereign and sister to Avaneira," she introduced, not sure if she'd been at the challenge for Drakon's crown in the first place. Regardless, Morrigan would be happy to know her. @Parvati had words of logic for Feyre, though likely not ones she would like to hear. @Jewel, on the other hand, made an offer to test the strength of the pair of new ranked. "I'll fight the other, if you all desire the practice." Morrigan was always happy for a friendly brawl, after all.

Oh, how the girl did stomp and spit and throw her tantrum. Petra was not impressed, and arched a brow - the smirk spread across her face was not terribly kind, but given the affiliation of the cub to her new home she knew better than to lose her head. Only once @Parvati had said their piece - logical, almost jarringly so - would the lilac wraith address the girl. “Careful,” Petra warned smoothly, “I got fat by eating little children.” She tilted her head to the side; she was not above putting anyone in their place - not even someone as young as @Feyre.

“And I am hungry.”

With a sniff she then regarded the black-pelted wraith - @Jewel - with an a finely arched brow. She looked a brute, in all honesty, with her muscular build and scarred features. Certainly the sort of soldier you would want in your army. She would not have a chance to speak, though, before @Morrigan arrived. There is something vaguely familiar about the woman, and it is only once she gave her address that all would become clear. Her expression lightened, albeit marginally. “Avaneira - is she well? I know her, though our paths have not crossed recently.” She thought back to the spooked little lioness and the gnarled, shit-coloured man that oppressed her. “I am Petra Amherst, and I would be honoured to have the opportunity to fight my Queen to prove myself.”

Then, seeking to sidestep away from the child - “away with you,”, she instructed firmly - Petra would angle her body towards the black-pelted Queen, posture defensive; shoulders rolled, head low and limbs evenly spread with claws extended. She had settled on her opponent, now it would be up to the Sovereign to accept - and make her first move.

Careful, I got fat by eating little children. Morrigan was forced to hold back a snort of laughter but she couldn't stop the smirk on her face, hoping @Feyre would be logical enough to at least find someone closer to her own size to fight with. Her dark helmed brow rose in surprise when Petra claimed to know her sister. Another reassurance really. "She is. High Sovereign suits her, though she is busy with her newborn children at the moment." She was as well as cold be expected anyway, given all of the involved circumstances, but Morrigan still wasn't certain how public Avaneira was choosing to be about her childrens' fallen father. "It would be my pleasure, Petra." And certainly it would. Morrigan relished any kind of combat, but she held a good spar with a beautiful woman in particularly high regard.

Morrigan would moved with Petra as they prepared for their spar, rolling her shoulders forward just in case the new Gentry wished to start things off. She deferred to her Queen, however, and Morrigan was happy to oblige. Her opponent was smaller, but that didn't mean much. Likely meant she was quicker than the Greyflood. She balanced her weight on her back limbs as she prepared to lunge, keeping her dark tail out behind herself for added balance. Her skull was lowered and her jaws opened before she would attempt to lunge directly at Petra, aiming the center of her skull for the right side of her opponent's neck, her ears pinned back against stray teeth or claws. Her four limbs would stay planted for now, claws doing their best to grip the sandy earth, only seeking to gauge her opponent before making things complicated.

Morrigan did not seem angered by the way Petra had addressed the child - if anything, there seemed to stir a veiled amusement somewhere behind the professionalism. So Avaneira was a mother? More information to stow away. "Very good," was all the sleuth would hum, keeping focused on the fight that loomed - there would be plenty of time to discuss the matter further after they were finished here. The Greyflood Sovereign was larger than Petra, but she refused to let it intimidate her - she was too old and too experienced (and too damned bloodthirsty) to allow herself to be cowed by a little bit of extra brawn. There was a second or two where the pair eyed each other up - tension building into a heated crescendo - before @Morrigan lunged into action. Petra braced instinctively, and as fangs landed their mark wounds would bloom across the right side of her neck; blood seeped into lilac fur, and the Gentry expelled a low hiss in response. Lifting her front left leg, the wraith would seek to swipe across Morrigan's right shoulder blade in a diagonal motion with claws extended.

Morrigan had no desire to cause more injury than necessary as she hoped to see Petra to her newfound duties as quickly as possible. The Cove had only brushed against the tides of war so far, but not been pulled within. Better everyone kept as fresh as possible. The gumption of Ava's people today left her considering holding her own training event soon, so she might see where all of Caladan's strengths lie. No time like the present for practice though... She met her mark, tasting iron on her tongue as fangs pierced flesh on the right side of her opponent's neck. She made no effort to grip any more than flesh, avoiding deep punctures if possible.

But, as she felt Petra's claws successfully sink into the flesh of her shoulder, the grey fur staining black with her own blood, instincts bubbled forth more strongly. Morrigan would attempt to pull her neck and shoulders upwards, knowing this was likely to deepen her own wounds given Petra's grip, as she jerked her head violently upwards as well, attempting to drag her bottom fangs along whatever flesh she could grasp on the same right portion of her opponent's neck. She kept her weight on her hinds limbs mostly as she moved since her front half was fairly busy, tail flailing out behind her as she moved.

A little stress relief was all well and good, but Petra - despite her proclivities to chaos and bloodshed - would remember to not throw all of her strength into these attacks. After all, this was her Queen; while she would not be cowed into immediate submission by @Morrigan (a woman she did not know) the sleuth was practised in the ways of court. She knew better than to start being disrespectful, especially so early on in the game. Besides, what good was a wounded monarch to her, or to the rest of the pride? It put them at a disadvantage. It was easier said than done, though; instinct stirred, as it often did in these situations. Blood trickled down her chin, saturating her tongue and staining her lips. Pain bloomed across the side of her neck, more so now with the tugging movement involved. In retaliation, having now landed her first intended swipe to Morrigan's right shoulder, Petra would pull the limb back and seek to extend it for a second attempt; this time aiming to hook and pull across Morrigan's right elbow.

As Morrigan pushed herself upward she felt her opponent's claws tear into the flesh beneath the long ivory fury that covered her right elbow, the ruby red quickly visible and staining snow as it dribbling from new wounds. As her chest heaved, Morrigan snarled against the pain but narrowed eyes were alight with the elation she always felt in battle. Adjusting her weight once more she would attempt to lift her own right limb from the earth with claws extended, attempting to both get away from her opponent's grasping claws and to press her own right claws into the left side of Petra's chest. Beyond this, she just wished to minimize further damage to anywhere valuable, as Petra had proven a worthy opponent indeed. Certainly worthy of her new rank.

Her swipe connected, and - satisfied - she would withdraw her paw back to its natural position beneath her, braced and sturdy. As she puffed, the Gentry sensed that things were beginning to draw to a natural close. Just as well, really, for Petra felt her stamina begin to wane. It had been a while since she'd jousted with another; even in practice. The realization would prompt her to, once this was over, consider sparring more often. She was at her peak, after all - no use in letting that slip. Morrigan's blows landed to the left side of her chest, and Petra would grunt, hissing lowly as contact was made. In retaliation, the lilac wraith would press forward and part her jaws, seeking to make contact with the left side of Morrigan's neck. She would deliberately avoid any section remotely near the windpipe, instead favouring the loose skin of the scruff. Like the Sovereign, the sleuth did not want to cause any serious damage. This was practice, not a war.
