The echo of the battles around her faded away. Her heartbeat seemed to grow in her ears as it thundered so quickly that she could hardly hear anything else. Hanneth had lived through so much. The loss of her bio parents, her adoption and then loss of that family, learning to communicate to the dead, learning to talk to Hunter, finding Dero for his grandfather, bringing Hel back to life, fleeting love and betrayal, true love, first litter, bringing Reti back to life, friends who became family and adopted family who became friends, a second litter. She had seen death take Drakon, only to bring him back. She had seen the loss of her home, the death of cubs away from her protection, the battered state of her husband, the decline of him, the third litter, and his death. Birth of grand cubs and the joy of watching those she loves find their own love in another. The rise and fall of her family. So so much had shaped her life, shaped who she was. She had seen it all with open eyes. Taking it all in. Finding a way through it, finding a new normal.
But this.
This she could feel the crack in her soul, running through every inch of her as Miaran's teeth found Reti's neck. She could feel the rawness of Dero's death, not that long ago burst open as Reti's body moved toward the ground. She could feel her sanity wavering as she watched his blood drip to the ground right before he laid in the sand. She felt frozen. Maybe if she didn't move, didn't blink none of this would be true. She would wake from this nightmare and find herself in her den in the Summit tucked into Dero's side. Or maybe she will find herself still in the Jungle, her cubs tucked around her and Dero, the warmth from their family almost felt real to her for a moment.
No. NO. NO!
NO!This could not be happening.
Guilt ran through her like an unstoppable force as he looked at her, her eyes locked on his and remained that. She saw what he was telling her but her brain struggled to process. She should have listened to him. She shouldn't have said anything so loudly. She shouldn't have brought any of them here. She should be with him. Her legs didn't move at first, her mind and body unable to fully understand what was happening. Reti was always larger than life. He had lived far longer than her, far longer than any of them. He had chosen her and Dero to bring him back into this world, and he had made himself a mix of them. Reti had listened to Hanneth, heard Dero, and made himself every bit of their cub as any of them. He had grown so much, learning to love, to be happy, to forgive, to be on the right side of things, to live for more than just himself. Hanneth had given him a family and Reti... Hunter had trusted her.
Dero.
He entered her vision, standing over, in, Reti. She couldn't hear his words but he could see him speaking. He was dead. Dead. Dero's death had been, thankfully, out of her sight. It hadn't made it easier but all she had was the peaceful look of his body when she arrived. The knowledge that his pain was gone. His struggle was over. That was just a few months ago. She wasn't healed from it. She hadn't even really started to heal from it, just pushing on.
Dero.
So handsome even in death. She could see just how upset he was and how protective he was being. They had fought of Reti. Hanneth had hid who Reti was from Dero and while it ended up not mattering, in the moment, she had wondered if it all had been worth it. Seeing his afterlife form there with Reti, ready to accept him to the other side, she knew it was. She knew it had been when she saw Reti shed his first tears when she told him that Dero had passed away. She had known him before, known him as he grew, and she would know him after this.
Reti.
"Hanneth" floated in breaking the fog around her. Allowing her to move. Finally. The seconds that had ticked by had felt like hours were broken. The noise of the battles around her rushed back in as Hanneth ran forward.
RETI! She howled and she crossed the sand.
SOMEONE SAVE HIM! She screamed to anyone listening. This had been her fault. She got to him, her body collapsing over him. The warmth of his body was still there for her to feel.
Maua! She cried. Her tears flowed fast as her body shook with her calls to Maua. She knew better but she didn't care. She had to try. If his murderer wanted to come at her again, Hanneth would be the one to face her and the fury of a mother with a broken soul was one that she doubted the fool would ever understand.
Bring him back to me. Let me have him again. Let me love him. Hold him. Have a little more time. please. She felt so dizzy as she laid across him.
@Dero. She whispered. Desperate for her husband.
Reti. I love you. I love you. Come back. I love you. Her voice was barely there. Hanneth could feel the ground under her spinning. Her son had been killed because someone dared judge what she believed in. Because someone couldn't accept that others lived differently than her. Because someone thought themself higher than others.

Miaran.
All at once, her body stilled. Her tears stopped. Her breathing slowed. Hanneth stood. Her mismatched gaze shimmered with the tears that had streaked her face. Her breathing was sharp as she looked for the grey lioness. She found her. Hanneth's voice was sharp, clear, and held a tone that she had never had in her life before.
I curse you. You will always be lonely. Those you feel like you trust will leave you. I curse you. You will never know peace, you will never sleep soundly, the dead will always be with you. You will always be reminded of the life you took. You will die alone. Her body shook, in grief or anger, she wasn't sure. She didn't know about the words spoken to Reti but if this lioness thought her a witch, let it be so. A rare emotion flared in her eyes. Hate. Pure, unchained, hate.
Her son.
She turned back to him, uncaring about what Miaran did with the curse. Reti was already gone, he had fought for her, for all of them, and he had paid a price she never would have asked of him. She felt empty and heavy all at the same time, floating above this and yet so rooted to the sand that she knew she wouldn't be able to touch it again without the memory of this day haunting her. His black and bronze body was unmoving as she laid herself back down and laid gentle kisses on his face. Her paws pushed his mane away from his face so she could see him clearly. She had seen so much in her life, too much, but this was likely the breaking point for her.

Roan. @
Hero. Somewhere in her mind, she knew they were there watching this but she couldn't bring herself to find them. To see Roan's reaction to losing another brother. She couldn't do it so her mismatched gaze stayed on Reti as the war fought on around her.
