Her shoulder still ached as the skin healed around the gouges, but it was much better than it had been and no longer tender when putting weight onto it. Claws dug into sand as she stretched and stepped free from her sweltering den into even more sweltering sunshine. The heat of the day had already arrived and boy was she not ready for it. Quite frankly, she was ready to leave this place and find a home elsewhere.

But until such time she could take her leave, she was going to keep the heat at bay with a lie in the lake. She held tight to the scarce shadows beneath the trees lining the shore and lowered herself into the shallow waters with a splash, wondering how much worse the day was going to get.

"I wonder if one would splash so freely if they knew what lurked in the waters” the voice drawled out smoothly, it belonged to the ivory lion lurking in the shadows of a nearby palm tree. Golden eyes gleamed in the shadows, what would have been the only give away to his presence if he had not spoken.

As for his cryptic phrasing, Pompeii had considered bringing crocodile hatchlings to the oasis to see how they thrived. It was a hard method to test though when he didn’t have the gentleness of their mother when carrying them.

Shifting slightly he accidently let go of the hatchling he had last attempted to bring, watching it roll lifelessly down between them until it rested in the scorching sun. Pompeii let his eyes drift from the crocodile to her. Oops.

“If it helps, this didn’t come from there,” he muttered dryly, realizing how it might appear otherwise.

Pink eyes roved the man over her shoulder, annoyance likely clear in her narrowed eyes. She came here for some peace and quiet and, already, she was getting the opposite of that. Not to mention the frustration at not having noticed him in the first place. "Tell me," she snapped. "What exactly is lurking around her besides you?"

From his loosened grasp, she watched the reptile tumble into better view. Dead. And young, judging by the size. She looked from the hatchling, to the lake, and back to the man. "It didn't? Do you just like to carry around dead hatchlings then? Bit of a weird hobby, don't you think?"

She rose from the cool waters to join him in the shadows, passing the perished croc without another glance. Her eyes instead were focused on the stranger as she stood looking down at him. He wasn't much bigger than she—Hmm, I can take him. "Who are you?"

Maybe he would find her irritating on any other day, but today she was just amusing. “Oh someone’s cranky,” he teased with a sneer. Rolling his shoulders into a shrug, “I’ve heard of weirder hobbies honestly,” he admitted with a snort. And she left the water to approach, strange usually they didn’t do that. Yellow eyes narrowed a bit while she stopped before him and looked him over. A brow raised while his lips pulled into a thin frown.

“Aren’t you blossoming with manners and charm,” ;he retorted sarcastically, feeling his toes flex out his claws cautiously. Yes, she was a pride member but far be it for him to take a beating for disrupting her time. If she wanted privacy she could have said so instead of getting up in his face. Speaking of...

“Personal space sweetheart, your breath is atrocious” he added adjusting himself to step back a bit and wrinkled his nose as if the smell disturbed him. "“Quite frankly the little hatchling smelled better,” he added with a half scoff," maybe you should return to the water and take care of that, hm?” Oh yes he was dodging her question, by being a jerk but hey of it worked.

Cranky? She let insult #1 roll off her shoulders without much more thought; it's not like it wasn't true.

She did much the same with insult #2. Manners, if that's what you wanted to call it, were not her strong suit. A twitch of an ear indicated her disagreement over her charm though. I think I'm quite charming... when I want to be. And she didn't exactly want to be with this stranger who had already insulted her twice without once giving his name.

It was insult #3 that really set her off. "You're about to have bigger problems than my bad breath." Without missing a beat, she dug her hind paws into the sand and leapt forward, aiming to swipe at his cheek.

Oh there was that lovely little nerve he accidently struck. Her words of warning made him lean back on his own hind legs. His eyes narrowed while he retracted his head from her swinging paw, but he just wasn’t swift enough. Claws hooked across the bridge of his nose slicing across it straight into his cheek beneath his eye. Fuck that smarted!

A snarl left him while he attempted to seize her wrist in his jaws, his eyes narrowed into slits while he tucked his ears into his mane. Shoving forward to try and force her back in an awkward stance. Tail lashing while he kept his four limbs on the ground.

Her claws left some nice, fresh red marks along his snout as her blow made contact. Ha! Ain’t got much to say now, do you?! A smirk crept across her lips, of course, until he quickly caught hold of her wrist and pressed in.

Surprised at the sudden restraint and on three paws, she stagger-hopped back until a paw brushed against something scaly. Something dead. The hatchling. She snickered and reached down to grasp the limp lizard by the tail, swinging it up to try and catch the man on the snout, hoping it’d be, at the very least, shocking enough for him to release her. At best, might leave a little bruising.

was working, he was forcing her back in a hop like fashion and he couldn’t hide the grin curling at the corners of his mouth while he held her wrist in this awkward dance. THWACK! The smile quickly faded as leathery skin slapped the top of his muzzle right where he had bleeding scratches making him let go. A scowl was worn on his maw while he glared intensely at her. The actual hell!?

Infuriated he charged forward to attempt to tackle her into the sand, jaws opened to try and grasp at her neck on the side. His eyes narrowed while he felt his claws curled into the sand below, he was actually showing a incredible amount of restraint. If he truly meant her harm, he wouldn’t have held back.

Success! "Ha, ha, ha, ha!" She couldn't help but laugh at that stupid look on his face. Aw, but then he had to go and be mad about it. Never mind the fact that she had gotten mad over mere words, rather than a physical assault. She dropped the crocodile unceremoniously as he shoved forward with much more force than the first time. She tucked her chin, bringing up her shoulder to take the brunt of his bite, but there was no holding steady against his charge; their collision sent her easily tumbling to the ground. Sand shoved its way into her ear canal and mouth and, sputtering, she aimed a kick of her back legs at his underbelly to get him away. It was the most awful feeling and she wanted to dunk her head beneath the surface of the lake to rid herself of it. Get the FUCK off of me! was what she wanted to scream, though, alas, could not with a mouthful of sand.

Pompeii overestimated his tackling power, so when she folded under him like a wimpy gazelle it sent him a bit too far over her. As he tumbled overtop of her, her back legs kicked out and did a nice set of slashes across his underside from middle ribs to almost his groin. And Pompeii did not go over gracefully, the sudden success would have him clambering over her claws out and scrambling to adjust himself.

Leaping suddenly he rolled opposite of her head panting slightly, his eyes narrowed while he noticed her choking on sand. A laugh erupted from him watching her struggle before he sneered, “You calm down yet girlie?” he asked tauntingly his body poised and ready to jump back if necessary. Hell he was kind of having funnow!
