it's... snowing?

it's snowing.

at first she'd mistakened the flurries for the smoke wisps that gave this place its name. but, no -- there's a chill in the ari that isn't just from the cold. the sight is strangely beautiful but still kassandra frowns, finding only dread in her heart at the sight. it meant winter was coming, and quick. or , rather, it was already here. it only serves to stregethen her resolve, though, and her head tilts back as she chuffs out -- a loud call, hoping to summon any nearby felines to join her. a hunt in the first flurries of the season, to mark the change in seasons. and to help them all prepare for that very change. her tail flicks at her ankles, brows knit together in clear worry.

Smaug was not a fan of colder weather. He much preferred the scorching sun, feeling it warm him up from the inside out. It was a comfort to him, one that he had learned to love a long time ago. And while he padded through the wilds and the snow was beginning to fall from the sky, he'd let out a low growl - clearly irritated. Ember eyes took in his surroundings, scouting out the area just like the rest he'd been in before. Nothing of interest or intrigue popped out at him, only burnt down trees and the ash that was left behind; but somehow things still thrived here.

The call catches his attention, causing him to pause before continuing. He might as well get a hunt in when it could be an easy meal, having several others to help. But they'd have to wait for more to join in, which he hoped would happen.

If he'd thought the tundra was cold, then it was nothing compared to this.

The snow flurries are minimal but a dark omen, heralding what was to come in the following months. Perhaps he could hole up in a den and sleep through the worst of it. It was a good idea but it did little to warm his bones now. The call to hunt that reaches his ears, however, certainly will.

Desert paws flex into the burnt soil as he pads after them, finding the duo standing quietly. A small chuff leaves his lips as he joins them, settling in even as he remains alert, attentive. Pale eyes can't help but sweep over the surroundings, noting the rather large tree off to their left. It stands taller than the rest but it's just as burnt, bark turned to to charcoal. It'd be a good way to help orient himself if he lost his way through the smoky fields.

And speaking of...

The soil at his paws is mostly dirt and sand. Typical, nothing special. But it seems some of the scorched trees had fallen and become charcoal, for there's an ashiness to the soil here that's atypical. He leans his muzzle down to better inspect, noting the way it smears dark across his pawpads. Hmm. That would be useful...

Maybe the snow complicates her search for suitable herbs just a little, but in this instance, all can be forgiven, because snow's just so fun! Like a fox on the scent of a mouse, she vaults into the air, plunging headfirst into the dirt. The layer of snow is only thin, but that's just what you're supposed to do when it snows. There's no sign of the gnetum plant here, though. That's probably just because she can't see anything with her head in the dirt, but the rosy lioness doesn't quite seem to consider that.

She attempts to pull back, suddenly finding herself stuck. Wiggling her not inconsiderable girth, she gives a big heave, and something gives way then, her head popping free. To her surprise, she's met with the sight of lions then, not too far off. Happily, she starts making her way toward them in big, bounding strides, displaying all the finesse and subtlety of a rampaging elephant... who's also in musth. "Oh! Wait for me! I want to join, too!"

He just so happened to be nearby, entranced by the first little sprinkle of snow in the dying fall season. Winter would be here soon enough, as if he didn't already have enough snow to deal with in the Summit. But with all the hungry little mouths running around, the opportunity for a hunt was never passed up lately. Even with stranger, Hero was bound to walk away with something, right? As he neared the collection of felines, the group didn't look all that large just yet, so he hung back just a bit before reaching them. "Spirits, please aid us in this endeavor. Bless this hunt so that the chill of winter may not reach our bones." A little divine padding couldn't hurt. And with that, the socked lion grew closer, slipping in among the rest and ready to partake when the call was made.

"Don't suppose you've got any tricks on fighting and hunting in the snow?" it is a mischievous smirk she casts across to the male she had trailed here, totally inviting herself to mooch some more masterful information from @Roarke. "I don't even know how to move in this stuff," he was good to talk to, and he wasn't her dad - so win, win.

"By the way, have you ever backed out of a fight?" it was more a hushed whisper now as they came upon the hunting group, cosying up against the white blanket of snow that seemed so painfully out of place in autumn. "At what point do you make that call?" he certainly wore enough scars, and honestly Birdie didn't imagine him ever backing down.

By now, Roarke has come to expect the plum youth to just pop into existence - he'd picked up her scent a little ways back, so he doesn't even flinch when Birdie slides up to his side. He just sighs, and keeps walking.

"I live in the snow" he points out simply, "so I'd hope I know what I'm doing." That said, he does consider the question for a moment. "Tracking is easier, but hiding is not. Running is much, much harder for us. Get as close as you can before attacking."

It's the next question that pulls a soft, amused huff of laughter from his throat. The air turns white around his muzzle. "No." Every fight - win or lose - Roarke has seen through to the bitter end.

"If you start a fight, you finish it. If someone starts a fight against you, you make sure they don't make that mistake again." Maybe it's a harsh lesson to impart, but it is exactly how Roarke lives and what he believes.

Arkyn walks across the snow as silently and slowly as he could. He didn't want to risk the other lions that had gathered to hear the crunching of freshly fallen snow and alert them of his presence. While he moves closer his eyes are examining his surroundings, noting the burnt and dead trees and all the ash that seemed to never leave. It would be useful to him, though, as he slowly lowers himself to the ground and begins to roll one way and then the other to ensure his fur was coated in a thin layer of ash. It would be a good way to keep his scent hidden while he continued to creep up on the group. He continues to move silently until he comes near a rather large fallen down tree, using it to help block the view of others seeing him while he peered on to watch.

The place feels sepulchral, condemned to perdition after some destructive force undoubtedly reduced it to coals and cinders. A pall of black smoke hangs over the wilds, death-struck and cheerless. He runs across it regardless, his lungs filling with the fumes that seem to plague the wilds forevermore.

Then a chuff blares out across the silence, loud and distinct, and he slows to follow the source of the sound. He slinks up to the group awkwardly, and quickly recognizes @Kassandra. If she's here, surely a meal will follow. Claws extract from their sheaths and he sharpens them on a dead tree, before placing them back down on the ground, nodding at the merle woman. He's ready.

At first, he thought it falling ash; but the fires had long quelled in this place, and the gentle flakes that floated from the sky were far too crystalline, far too perfect to be soot. Kvare's gaze narrowed and lifted upwards, watching as the first of winter's snowfalls descended from the clouds above. His chest heaved with every breath, his focused, energetic jog interrupted by the sudden phenomena. It had been so long since he'd seen snow, that eager was he to abandon his strength and endurance training for just a moment. And yet, perhaps it were a blessing, for he'd quickly heard and smelled lions beginning to amass; certainly, another hunt. He'd long begun to refill Caladan's caches to the point of near-spoilage, but Kvare would never turn up the opportunity to flex his muscles.
