it was hot. even as summer gave way to fall. it was hot.

ghyslaine panted heavily, where she had been jumping over boulders, and practising her sprints- her breathing a heaving sort of gasp. yet, she kept at it for a long while- sprinting ahead, hopping over rocks, everything she did was to work her endurance- to make her stronger. finally, taking a break- she headed into the darkness of the caves, intending to work out a path, so that she could run the darkness.

she hadn't intended on coming across a cavern so quickly, and she hadn't intended on there being... food.

crouching immediately, she tried to quiet her breathing as her eyes widened to acclimate to the dim light- light only provided by a crack in the cave roof- where a pool of water gathered and the creature was drinking.

she remained behind some rocks, her tail twitching silently, as she prayed that someone else would come along and make this hunt... a bit more fair in the name of the lions.

2 YEARS, NO BONUS

Summer is slowly trickling away, but the dunes remain scorching as ever. It's the perfect place to be alone, the unceasingly blistering heat a good deterrent for most living beings. For Uma, the swelter is worth it; besides the occasional lizard, she hasn't run into a single soul all day. Save for the odd fly buzzing past, all is quiet, which only serves to amplify the footsteps echoing distantly. Coming out of her sun-induced daze, her opal eyes blow open, ears swiveling forward. In the distance, she finds her pridemate, running full-bore across the hot sand. Out here in the dunes, moving too much during the day is never a good idea.

She hesitates for a moment, but not wanting to be the one responsible for letting one of Violarum's friends run herself to death, finally gets up from her cozy spot. She forges after her, spurring herself onward at full speed as her paws sink into the sand with every step. By the time she catches up with her, she's panting, sinews twitching in protest. Realizing the other is on the trail of something, she automatically drops into a crouch, but when the wheat lioness disappears behind the first bend, she doesn't follow. "You go." She offers, speaking in a quiet hush. "I'll be here at the mouth of the cave in case it slips away." It's not that tightly closed in spaces give her the creeps-- clearly, practicality is her central concern here.

It feels like he's scouting more outside of Lorien's borders than inside of them lately, but as he's scouring the canyon, he doesn't find much beyond rocks. The hot air is hung with a deafening silence, broken only by the occasional pitter patter of the odd lizard or scorpion. Suddenly there's movement in the desert, and he can almost swear he can see @Ghyslaine's golden tribal markings before the figure is swallowed by a cave. As he stands there gawking, a lioness resembling his sister soon follows without hesitation. Is this where they're hosting their pride meetings now or something? How mysterious. His curiousity piqued, he follows them into the deepening darkness of the cave. Uma's hushed voice pinballs against the cave walls, and he slowly realizes they're prepping for a hunt. "I'll do it. Your big back end is blocking out all the light from outside." With a single paw, he pushes Uma closer to Ghyslaine, and keeps vigil at the mouth of the cave.

Sometimes, leaner is better.

Ophelia slips away from her home within the Brook, setting out to explore the place she so fondly called home. Whilst the ivory lioness was having good times and bad times now that the freak weather had passed, the woman found herself enjoying the simpler things in life.

Walking through scarab dunes and into the pits of the crimson hideaway, her sea foam eyes find the quiet figures of @Ambrose, @Uma and @Ghyslaine. Chuffing to them, she quietly joins them and observes the prey that seemed to wander freely in front of them. She hears the back end of Ambrose's words, and Ophelia wonders what kind of insult he was trying to impose upon the other lioness. Hello, She interjects, acutely aware that these three were all from the same pride. I think it's a good idea to cover all exits, and draw it out into a tight area. Less chance of it escaping, Ophelia comments with a gentle flick of her ear.

5 years, Level 4 Ranger Maia had seen the white figure of @Ophelia flip into the crimson hideaway. Initially, the High Sovereign thought nothing of the stranger - she saw strangers all the time, passing them daily and not particularly suspecting anything. But it was the gentle waves of conversation, combined with the scent of prey, that seemed to catch her attention. The trained hunter adjusts her trajectory and slips into the hideaway that she had never particularly paid much attention to before. It takes a moment for her fiery eyes to adjust to the change in lighting, but when she does, she spots Ophelia and three other lions: @Ambrose, @Uma and @Ghyslaine. Had she met any of these before? The woman wasn't sure (Ghyslaine seemed vaguely familiar), but she did not mind hunting with strangers. Would you mind if I lead this hunt? She whispers to the others, pausing briefly in the hope that no one would object. I agree with you, She remarks to Ophelia. Driving it into a corner is our best bet. Does everyone have their roles sorted? one would likely not think the desert a plentiful place for herbs, but those who would doubt that were not the daughter of a healer- such as she was. she had come all the way to the desert with one herb in mind- aloe vera. useful for burns, irritations, and cuts- among many other uses. so, as she scouted out the rocky territory, noting the various caverns and caves as she follows not particular path- she is immensely pleased to find a large aloe vera plant.

she sets to work, slicing off some of the largest leaves with her claws and piling them up- as many as she can carry- before moving on, following a dusty trail that vaguely smelled of other lions. her path seemed to twist and turn, taking her further and further into the territory- until her jaws began to ache, just as she found another aloe plant. gently depositing what she had thus far, in a carefully chosen nook of rocks- she left the plant for a moment to follow some rather fresh scents into a nearby cavern.

she wasn't expecting to stumble onto a hunting party, but when she does, the offer to help trips from her lips quickly. "i'll help too." the words are quick and quiet, as she drops into a crouch- her eyes fixated on the group before her.

Maia awaits any disagreement from the lions that had gathered from her leading the hunt. It does not appear so, and she notes the additional presence of @Ansella before they began. Settling into their roles and lowering herself to the ground, Maia set off and began to drive a lone hippopotamus calf away from its mother and herd. After the calf had fallen, and she had taken her share, Maia looked at those who had assisted and smiled at them. Thank you for your efforts, She comments, lifting her form from the ground and taking a few steps back. Please, take what you need. She offers, before departing. I'm sure I will see you all soon. Ophelia joins them and chips in with advice of her own. Maia and Uma quickly agree, and the latter promptly disappears into the cave with Ghyslaine. As more lions filter into the cave, he's left behind with only the quiet and deserted canyon to accompany him. Ears rotate as alarming noises rise out of the cave. Seems the hunt has started. Still, he keeps a watchful eye out for any sign of the calf, in case it gets any funny ideas. At some point during the hunt, it finally decides the lion-infested cave is not exactly favorable for its survival.

When it tries to exit with numerous lions on its heels, Ambrose does something risky and throws his entire weight around its neck in an attempt to slow it down. His front legs clasped around the calf, he tries to take a good chunk out of the side of its neck, hopefully dispatching it quicker. Finally, the sturdy calf goes down, and almost the entirety of his face is stained red with its blood. It takes him a couple of minutes to rip off an armored leg, and he brushes his side against Uma and Ghyslaine before disappearing into the brush.

Her pounding footfalls slow as she enters the cave, heaving breaths amplified in the still air. She starts with surprise, stumbling further in with an unceremonious shove from @Ambrose. Unable to wiggle her way out of the situation without being perceived as a wussy cat, she glowers at him over the crest of her shoulder, all but about to strike him dead with a single look when another presents herself. "Alright." She concedes. She might not be keen on venturing into the cave, but she's pleased to hear @Ophelia is in agreement, at least. "We'll go with Ghyslaine. Ambrose, keep an eye out." There aren't any reflective surfaces in this cave, so she's pretty certain he should be able to do a decent job without getting distracted by his own mirror image again or something.

More join, a faintly familiar grey lioness and an unknown mahogany one. Uma seeks their eyes, glad of the two additional hunters. Somewhat emboldened by their presence, she tamps down her reluctance to enter the cave and poises for action. She's off around the corner, coming upon a young hippo. The limited space renders it difficult to attack it from different sides, but thankfully they're many, and inevitably the cave becomes its final resting place. She tucks in, relishing the tender meat. Once satisfied, she sprawls her legs out in front of her, stoically waiting for her pridemates to finish so they can begin the trek back home.
