The opportunity was too good to pass up. Too sweet. He was hungry - had been for days; one of the downsides of not living in an organised group of any sort (because you certainly couldn’t call his family unit uniform by any means) - and the scent of prey nearby was too strong to ignore. There would be others nearby thinking the same as him - seeing a prime opportunity and preparing to take it. He was big and brawny enough to not be concerned about competition - in fact, hunting would be one of the few occasions where he’d actually tolerate strangers enough to cooperate with them.

… Or, more accurately, cooperate until it didn’t suit him anymore.

He would climb - huffing with the exertion, for it was a considerable trek, even for a fit and seasoned nomad like him - to one of the higher outcroppings, in order to gain a better vantage point. From his new position he would wait on the precipice of the tall rock ledge, keeping an eye on the herd that passed below. As well as studying them, Ívar would wait for the inevitable - or so he hoped - arrival of other lions. He knew he wouldn’t be the only one to spot them.

The scent of prey and of another lion rolls in on the breeze. His attention snared, he scales the peak, trying to gauge the direction of the prints in the snow when he's in danger of losing track of the other. The higher he goes, the more the cold chastises him. The climb is far from an easy one, and his sides are heaving for air once he reaches the top. He quickly notices the man, eyes trained to the ground. He fidgets, afraid to spill off the edge to his death if he so much as misjudges a step. Still, he waits for @Ívar's signal, suppressing a shiver.

The lioness had been using the peaks as a place to exercise—a refreshing venue from the humid woods she currently called home. When one padded up and around the narrow stone trails, veering around boulders and avoiding sudden drop offs, it was enough to work up a sweat… or a pant. Despite the chill in the autumn air, Tanaz felt warm—her blood pulsed readily through her veins, on the verge of adrenaline but not quite, and when she scents the herd, she accepts the unspoken challenge and angles towards the path that leads her up the cliffside. The other two are readily noticed upon her arrival, both clearly present for the same reason as she, and the chestnut cat feels comfortable enough to pad forward and join them. She peers over the edge at the herd, hazel eyes glinting and eager, and she awaits the signal to begin.

Such a gloomy place, yet still, life springs between its cracks and crannies. Last time she experimented with herbs, she ended up ingesting yellow Oleander and got incredibly sick as a result. Today she wants to test out an antidote to its poison, as Oleander is easily mistaken for several other yellow flowers. She doesn't want anyone else to go through such agony. She's curious about the therapeutic effects of garlic when it comes to this flower, and with the wild garlic she managed to collect earlier, she think she has a fairly effective remedy on her paws. With calculated and precise swipes of her claw, she's removing the bubils from the plant; the rest is worthless to her. However, there's no time to test it just yet, as a group of lions standing on a precipe catch her eye. She winds her way up the peak, the biting cold seeming to hook itself deep into her bones. Maybe a hunt will warm her up nicely.

the patchwork cat follows the scent of prey, having descended the slopes of her home for more stable ground. hunger and duty calls her as she stalks the animals, noticing the way that they seem to slow as if tired from their journey through the valley and up the ridges of the peaks. desdemona keeps her body low, paws light and quiet as she uses the rocky ledges and shadows to her advantage to hide.

as she watches patiently, her eyes dance upwards to the higher cliffs of the peak. there's movement above her head in the shapes of lions, surely watching from higher ground. the cat's tail tosses, a quiet single that they've been noticed by the predator rather than prey. with two vantage points, perhaps they could make this easy work.

The mountain is closely choked with pine trees, and Uma relishes their sweet smell as she works on brandishing her weapons, claws dragging across frigid bark. Catching the whiff of prey, she abandons the activity, loping after her brother as he sets off, clearly having smelled the same thing. She pelts up the ridge, her breath coming in frosty, stinging breaths. Cresting the cliffside, three others reel into view, all staring intently down at something below. Unaware of a fourth biding her time in the shadows, she slows to a walk, allowing herself to recover and regain her breath as she joins them, tri-colored eyes instantly alert as she traces their gazes downward and spots the passing herd.

2 years, no perks

There were quite a few lions lying in wait high up on Freyr Peak, peering down at the passing herds below. Opium had noticed them below, and made quick work to join them on the cliff to wait and watch for a signal of some sort. Opium was a spy, not a huntress, so she did not seek to lead a hunting party by any means. She was too new at her current pride to lead one either, but she was happy being a follower this time - simply waiting for instructions before acting on assumptions.

They weren't too high up on the peak, but high enough to see that the lands beyond were shrouded in low-hanging clouds. Puffs of their breath appeared before their faces on every exhale, and hints of winter showed themselves every now and then. The peaks jagged rocks wouldn't make for an easy way now, so they'd have to be vigilant once they eyeballed something worth their time.

Catching a whiff of something potent, Opium momentarily paused, sticking her head in the nearby drying brush to eyeball an equally dry looking plant hidden within. Wolfsbane, though its purple flowers were shrivelled and almost brown. Opium made a mental note to collect the plant later, but for right now, she'd focus on this hunt.

It was far from uncommon for Cerberus to be found lingering about the peaks, either lounging about in some carefully chosen vantage point or traversing the sharp winding trails at a clipped pace working his muscles into a dull burn, warm breath fogging in the cool air. The latter was the case today. Whether or not any clear threats to the Peithos male existed within this land or not, the hound was loathe to slack off on his training. He would accept nothing less than both a body and mind kept in top condition.

So, even though his breath was beginning to puff with exertion and his heartbeat was becoming a low, steady drum in his ears, the scent of prey on the wind did not escape his notice. Neither did he miss the presence of the group of lions gathering overhead. A decent opportunity. After a quick roll in the gravel and dust to mask his scent, the hound would bound the rest of the way up to join them with short, controlled sides, nostrils flaring wide as he sucked in a deep breath. He remains silent as he settles into a crouch, sharp eyes tracking the movements of the herd below. He expects his presence alone is enough to declare his intentions.

As the herd lumbers past below, she spots it-- a straggler, the mountain's steep, treacherous terrain perhaps having betrayed it. Uma isn't much of a graceful climber herself, but she's learned to adapt to anything, as evidenced when she retreats from the cliffside, pelting down the ridge with unadulterated speed. Her freshly sharpened claws grant her some additional purchase, and with the downhill speed in their favor, the job is as good as done. A familiar calico emerges from the other side, leaving the hippo no escape as it is quickly felled. Dust settling around them, Uma contentedly tucks in, tail lashing dangerously at any who venture too close. Getting her fill of meat before the body is reduced to nothing but vulture-food, she shakes herself, managing a general nod toward the assembly before she quickly retreats, the valley becoming too crowded to her liking.
