He followed the call of one pridemate south, though these lands were no less cold. Wind gathered speed on the open plains. Unlike on the peaks, there were no windbreaks. Also no whistling and riddles of wind over rock - the relative monotony of winter's roar seemed rather disconcerting. He wondered if this ice extended over the ocean. In the distance, the foliage grew even more sparse. That could be long sheet ice. He wondered if it tasted like salt.

He would have offered his assistance without ceremony, save for the incursion of non-Summit lions. He squint. A lot of rogues. What were they doing out here? Why would someone not want to live in a pride anyway? He didn't like it, and found himself standing statue-still except for one scuffing paw. He persuaded himself to move forward while still stepping lightly, shifting weight onto scrunched toes so his footprints would be less unique. Maybe he'd stop back and see how the wind had treated them.

Arriving, he was relieved to find another from the Summit (though tiny, and a stranger) and bounced to join them, preferring to work with those of his own pride.

Soon more help arrives, making the hunt for the giraffe calf. Sabre makes sure he is aware and mindful of where the others were at, not wanting to slip up and run right smack into any of them. He continues with swiping unsheathed claws at the calf, ripping into thick hide and causing for it to call out in mercy. The calls were in vain, though, and soon enough it would be felled. Slowing down to a stop, the guard dog sucks in breath to help regain normal breathing before giving a nod of well done to the group. It was always easier to hunt with a group rather than on your own, even if he wasn't real big on sharing.

The brute wasn't too hungry, though, and turns to leave. He begins to jog once more, keeping a steady pace to keep his heartrate up. The hunt did exhilarate him and helped with his endurance, but he wanted to practice a little bit more before he called it a day and found something to snack on.

They killed. Quickly the skin cooled and gained roughness with the wind and the weakness of death. Inside the buffalo was warm. He panted and lingered near its stomach, nosing through the choice organs. The proximity of strangers discouraged his appetite. Once his energy returned, he rose with a nervous shake and attempted to retrace his tracks. Those he'd made during the hunt were obvious. He didn't like how small they were, and how numerous. It suggested a lack of confidence. Tracking back further, he returned to those tracks he had deliberately covered. His eye remembered, like a ghost, where he had been. He wasn't sure whether those covered ridges in the snow, barely distinguishable from the rolled dents of the wind, would be visible to any eye other than his.

He made a fresh parallel trace and then attempted to cover them in the same manner. Squint, compared them to the ones prior. The first ones had been blunted by the wind, but not too much. He didn't think he could evade an experienced tracker in this land. The wind was too predictable and thus any snow dents out of line stood out if you looked for them. He still didn't like being in the open, smelling like blood. If there were any nonlion scavengers out here he might be attracting them. So he headed home, mostly fed and increasingly cold.

There was one moment in the chaos that he had been able to lay his claws and embed them deep into their prey's flank but that was the end of it. As he led the charge onwards it appeared that at the very least it was slowly down but Chaeton did not let up. Instead he pushed himself even farther and felt that strain tenfold as he let his muscles do the work. Rushing alongside the animal and snapping his jaws, leaving it to pivot its last move into another lion that dealt the final blow. Chaeton began to slow until it was a gentle jog to a true stop, bowing his head to the lions that had gathered before setting himself off to the side to catch his breath from the hard hunting exercises he had experienced. exit chaeton

They bring the calf down and Sheol gives a great, shuddering breath as she detaches herself from the creature's side. The assembled lions take their leave swiftly and she's left standing over it, panting. The prey is dissected, bit by bit, and before it disappeared entirely into the bellies of those around her, the small maiden lurches to snatch a sizable chunk. Let them think what they will about the portion she's taken, but Faolán deserves breakfast in bed - and fuck anyone who said anything. She'd done her fair share, after all, even without claws. exit

Thankfully, others did come, several others whose skills were obvious in the ease without any obvious injuries they'd managed the kill. Khal would not seek to take anything more than what he needed for for his daily meal, as it was too far to bother taking anything back all the way to the jungle and the Summit had never needed assistance for food before. He considered it more of an exercise in fighting and tracking through the snow. As the others hunters began to depart, so too would he finish his short rest in the soft snow before turning back toward his initial goal, climbing the Summit and visiting his mothers. exit khal

The game of stealth is a delicate balance when played this far north, and quite literally too. The webbing between Jóhanna's splayed toes stretches wide and thin against cold snow as she shifts her weight carefully, trying to reduce the crackling noise of her pawsteps as much as she could as crept ever closer towards their prey, the sound of her heartbeat steadily growing louder in her ears as the moment for action drew nearer and nearer.

And just like that, the chase was on!

The run is exhilarating, but rather brief, as the calf's long, wobbly legs were evidently not built for charging through snowdrifts. It's almost a shame that it falls beneath their assault so quickly. Despite the warmth that had built in her rushing blood, the yearling's skin is terribly quick to cool to ice beneath even the faintest hint of sweat. She would take a moment to shake off the excess snow that had been thrown into her thick coat during the struggle, leaving her perfume tinged with the same coldness still trying to claw beneath her hide.

Fortunately, a warm meal should be just the trick to rebuff the chill for good, and Jóhanna would merrily step in to tear her share from the cooling carcass, before turning away to find a nice little hideaway to eat in peace.

Taking down the buffalo ended up being a lot easier than even she might have anticipated. Daneri had shuffled inwards at the beast, doing a back and forth dance with its movement, before finally getting a chance to sink her teeth into the creature and letting the prey falter. It's movements began to get more sluggish and less sporadic, leading Daneri to assume that the creature did not have much more time and thus it took its final breaths with a few loud and struggles calls to any who might help before it fell to the ground with a thump. Leaving the maned lioness to catch her breath, take her piece of the prize before sauntering off. exit daneri

The creature she tragged turned out to be a big ol' buffalo with a size and weight she might come to see herself grow into in time. Blue eyes watched its great breath puff from its wide nose as she waited for others to show up. Coupled with the icy wind, she could smell the earthy scents her coat gave off and she wondered if it might've been just a better idea to roll in the snow instead?

When others started trickling in, Syren's focus shifted farther away from her odd scent and closer to the buffalo at hand. A bold merle female jumped in, and steered it closer to the jaws of the brown lion that joined her. And then from there, it'd seem as steady trickle of lions would join and help take down the large creature.

"Ya welcome," Syren announced loudly as the creature was felled, those that came took what they wanted, and most of them carried it off into the abyss. Let them not forget just who invited them to this good hunt in the first place. She hadn't gotten to assist as much as she planned, but that was fine. She found it for them.

From what was left of the large buffalo carcass, Syren ate her share, without carrying it off. She took what she wanted, laid down, and then had some more before finally leaving the scene with a full belly. /exit

These lions certainly enjoyed hunting big game, didn't they? The chase and then the ensuing battle with the infuriated buffalo are quite taxing on Maven's slight frame, but in the end - she endures. The buffalo, however, does not.

Her breath mists in the air as she tries to steady it, narrow chest heaving despite all her efforts to not look like she was dying. Eventually, a soft laugh would flow out on an exhale when Syren's pointed words happened to reach her ears.

"Thank you...?" She acquiesces, if only to be polite as she slips past the girl to take consume her own share of the meal in friendly company. Yet even after everything, the carcass proves to be large enough that she could take some excess meat to the Summit's cache, if she was determined enough.

So with a determined huff, Maven would do precisely that.
