Finally, it would seem that he'd gained some recognition from his betters. Gauthier had come down from high to call upon those left of his family - which was worse than he thought. No adult Devorres left, just young adults and children. Veros snorted at the thought of having to achieve his hunt with mere yearlings. They'd better not fuck him up when he goes in for the kill, or get in his way, or perhaps he'd kick one of them in the raging beast's way...

The fields were still that morning as the sun began to peek over the horizon. His breath exited his nostrils in icy poofs as he scented the air for their victim. There was the scent of a distant musk, but it was hard for him to pinpoint where it was at this point. With a growl blooming at the back of his throat, he chuffed for his hunting partners roughly. Then he flicked his white-tipped tail and waited for them to arrive.

But he didn't sit idly. He continued his scent search in the icy winds, occasionally licking his nose to heighten his senses.

Sure, sure, it was morning, and the sun hadn't fully risen to its peak yet, but the light still managed to glint off the snow painfully whenever it caught it just right. He'd also never hunted before, so this was just doubling down on things. Still, he offered no complaint as he followed Veros, trying not to let himself squint in the light because his father had been right in that. He wouldn't look intimidating at all wandering around like he couldn't see a damn thing. Too bad he couldn't see a damn thing. He could see well enough past the growing pain between his brows to see that Veros had stopped, though only briefly. He too could pick up on the faint scent, and figured whatever they were after was lurking within the tall grass that only slightly bowed under the weight of whatever ice and snow remained. He wondered how many smaller prey they were walking right past without knowing. The girl followed her brother of course, she was always with him unless something caused the separation and even then she always found her way back, the golden lioness looked back at the younger cubs behind her, she was nicer than her brother, more like her mother, she never wanted to hurt a thing, and usually Veros did her dirty work, but she didn't trust that these cubs would let that slide so easily.

A sigh escaped her as she lowered her head and stalked forward after catching the scent Veros had, she moved carefully, circling away from the group so that she could go from another angle.

Veros barely batted an eye when the Rike kids approached, but he noted that @Arevalous had arrived, and that drove him on to pursue the prey. By this point, he had pinpointed where the scent was coming from, and what animal they tracked - a hippo calf. His chest swelled with excitement at the chance to take down such a difficult prey, but at the same time, he felt dread. Would the youngins screw this up for them? Should he and Arevalous have opted for their very own hunt?

"Hippo Calf. This way," he announced, though from there, he stooped closer to the ground and kept to what brush he could find in the meadow as he crept closer to it. When he looked back again, he realized the cubs had no idea what they were doing. Fuck! Did this mean he had to fucking teach them, too?

With a low and frustrated growl under his breath, Veros turned towards the brightest one of them (@Everick). "You," he whispered, beckoning him closer. He wasn't even going to pretend he remembered their names from the meeting. "Stay on its left flank, make sure it doesn't run off anywhere to the left. Do whatever you can to keep it from escaping."

And then, he looked around for @Arevalous and found her veering off to the right. "Areva, you're steering!" he hissed to her, hoping she had heard him. They hadn't even come upon the hippo calf yet, but he wanted to make sure everyone knew what they were supposed to do.

Looking around for the strawberry-colored sister, he chuffed quietly for her when he couldn't find her. "Um, girl?" he hissed for her, growing impatient. He wanted to get this over with. "Tell your sister her job is right flank. She needs to do what you do, but opposite side," he murmured to Everick, and then he focused forward.

Prowling forward, he quickened his pace until he found the gray hump of the grazing animal in the distance, and then he began to bound towards it. Out of the corner of its eye, the young hippo spotted this brightly-colored lion coming for it and began to move.

That was dangerous stuff, and while that was the whole point he wasn't sure this was a good idea. Well, he supposed it wasn't in a Rike or a Devorre to back down from a challenge, so he should be doubly set for this. He approached at Veros' beckons, shoving down the irritation he felt at being talked to like he was a simpleton. Eh, he could use the direction, he supposed. Time to show that he could be useful. Everick raced after the others, swinging wide to the left to head off the young hippo before it could think of escaping in that direction. It was... actually really fun getting to run full tilt like this and harry the creature, he thought as he sprinted along, all snarls and snapping teeth whenever the calf drew too close. He was grateful that he was tall, because otherwise he thought he'd have a hard time seeing the calf above the tall grasses. They were, in fact, quite good for hiding in, he thought. Bastian wasnt really feeling like helping others, he normally thought about his own business. But this time, he knew there would be a benefit for him if he cooperated with this "hunt," a costume from the Devoree side of his family. One he wasnt that familiar with. Yawning and with a bored expression, he arrived to see his sibling and two relatives already working their way to bring down the beast.

He didnt have clear instructions, but he was going to do what he thought was best. Cleverly, he approached to the calf's front and moved to attempt to bite on the top of the calf's neck, aiming to do so on near the base of the skull, hopping to inmobilize it.

Lorelei huffed as she followed the older lions, she stayed somewhat close to the lioness, seeing as she was way nicer than the one who'd called her sister, supposedly their cousins? The strawberry girl followed in step, noting how the lioness lowered and began to stalk and so she lowered too, silently creeping forward.

Her dual colored eyes sought out the prey and then she sprung forward to try and push the prey towards the much larger males, her brothers to be exact, she wanted, no, needed to be apart of this family, she needed this side of her lineage. To be a Devorre. Not just a Rike woman.

The albino cub was smart; his sister, not so much. Despite his direction, she dawdled, following behind and doing her own thing despite him trying to give them some direction for success. They were never going to bring down the hippo calf like this! Why did he agree to hunt with these youngins when he and Areva could've easily caught their own and presented it?

"Don't get in the way then!" he barked back towards @Lorelei as he pushed himself into a harder run, speeding up to align himself closer to the hippo calf. It was then that he noticed there was an extra cub with them - and gray one?! If he didn't carry the scent of his siblings, Veros might've actually tackled him to question who the fuck he was. However, he supposed to young boy had some sense in him as he aimed a bite for the calf's neck.

The hippo roared in pain, trying to veer towards the right. Veros sprang onto its back, leaving quite a few deep lacerations in its skin before falling off of the frantic animal.

1 - no perks Bastian kept trying to hit the beast on its vulnerable neck. It was just common sense to target the neck, even if it might be a dangerous move Bastian knew all creatures would perish by attacking their throat or nearby areas with vital arteries and other things. The hippo screams in pain but it only fuels his wish to being it down, mostly to win himself an entry into the males pride. He was doing this for his own gain rather than to directly help his relatives. Yes they were to be helped and all but Bastian wasn't the most caring lion and even though he would risk it for them. His priorities lied in his own wellbeing. And like that he dug his claws into the hippos shoulders aiming to gain a better hold while increasing his bite force on the back of it's neck, hopping the others would help. The golden girl allows the younger lioness to follow without care, she slinks in closer until she gets close enough that she can lunge forward, she throws her power into her legs and leaps onto the back of the creature, claws sinking into the tough flesh as she twists her body to grapple the young calf, her teeth finding purchase in its neck.

She could pay little attention to anything else as the young calf squealed and tried to throw her off while trying to outrun the other attackers, she just had to make sure not to fall underneath it's body or allow its angry mother to come rushing out of the bush at them.
