I pack a little pistol on my pistol beltLike a ghost coasting along on unfinished business, she lingered in the flowering field. It was the last place that the child had known familiarity, even if it had torn in her face to leave it a mess of red befitting of her namesake. Scarlet felt compelled to stay close in hopes that that seed of familiarity would sprout just like the flowers here, blooming into the form of her momma. But it never did. Cemre had cut her badly and left her bleeding, and never come back.

It hurt to cry, especially the eye on the white side of her face. The tears stung the taut scabs closest to that eye and made her cringe, so the frail child fought against the hot sting gathering behind her ruby gaze.

Momma would want her to be strong, focus on something else. Like...like the flowers around her. They were nice, and colorful. Scarlet had gotten better at stalking through them, getting her paws caught on the longer stems less as she hunted bugs while waiting. The insects crunched in a satisfying way between her needley teeth, but sometimes went down harshly and made her stomach complain.

Something besides a beetle had come across her path today, though. Small with big, pink ears and dull brown fur, it sat sweeping tiny paws over its whiskers. A moose, if she remembered right.

She was going to get the moose.

The prairie is fledged with small pinpricks of color, sweetening the still summer air as he bumbles around the place. His small stocky body and short legs have yet to develop and so, he negotiates the Gardens in the most clumsy way imaginable, often tripping over hidden branches.

The prairie is aflower, boasting all the colors of summer. Still his stark white pelt is easy to pick out among the flora, but he doesn't let that stop him. He's on the scent of... well, something. No one has ever told him what it's called by name, but he knows it's edible, and a fairly easy catch for a cub... if he can catch it off guard.

He doesn't leave his cover as he watches the mouse, half-glimpsed through the grass. He takes up a stalker position, his butt shimmying in the air as he prepares to pounce. Then he bursts out of cover, ears and eyes trained on his quarry as he mentally wills it not to notice him. It does.

But not in time.

The unlucky rodent tries to run, but he's already slammed his paws onto its little body, leaving it to wriggle in his grasp. His success occassions a victorious, shrill laugh from the youth. He's done it! As he tries to keep the very much alive mouse in his grasp, confusion flits across his face—wait, what does he do now?

She had been so close, just inches from pouncing when a patchwork blur pounced upon the moose instead. At first she can't tell what it is, but as the form stills against the bent flowers she can tell it is another cub, a boy. And he had her moose wriggling in his thieving little paw!

Give it! The ragged girl hissed, springing up to her full and not very considerable height as she stalked forward with her muzzle crinkled in a tiny snarl. You took it from me!

Scarlet's face hurt from the expression that twisted the healing flesh, but her chest hurt even more from the tight, hot ball of anger roiling inside of it. Her breathing was coming faster, pink nostrils flaring as she stomped up to the boy and reached to try and wrangle the moose from his paws.

The mouse starts poking its nose between one of his toes in a bid to get away, and as it's actually succeeding, he quickly covers his toes with his other paw. Ha. His small victory is quickly dashed when another cub waltzes onto the scene, demanding that he hands it over.

He only notices her now, which is quite a feat, given her white pelt. He begins to smile, but before a derisive laugh can reach his throat she's already power walking up to him. OH. "It's mine!" He objects, trying to keep the mouse secured in his grasp. As she tries to pry him off he tries to twist his body, keeping her at bay with a rather ferocious kick. "Stop it! Don't think I'll go easy on you just because you're a girl!"

He returns her vitriol with a tiny, ridiculous snarl of his own, trying his best to look intimidating. He can't afford to lose his quarry right now. His. Rightful. Quarry!

I pack a little pistol on my pistol beltThe kick rattles her thin frame, making the girl skid away a few steps before she rights herself with a snarl.

I saw it first! Scarlet's tiny growl is shaky, chest working overtime as her senses focus in on the tiny little creature struggling in the other child's grasp. It was so much more than a beetle, she could practically already taste the warm blood on her tongue. A shiver went through the pale cub, and then she was lunging at him with an angry shriek.

Scarlet's body bid her to do something, demanding to get that moose back. A hunger that didn't belong in any child drove her to attempt a clumsy flurry of swipes at the patched boy's shoulder, ruby eyes wild as an unbidden battle cry continued to escape her throat. Give it, give it!

His ears tuck back into his half-mane as the girl stubbornly rights herself, seemingly recovering quickly from his reprimanding kick. Why is she so damn stubborn?

She's growling at him. Quite pathetically, in fact. It's only now that he notices the fresh scars marring her face, and his eyes linger on them a bit too long. It looks like she's already been dealt her fair share of punishment—is she really willing to fight him for such a measly prize? Before he can finish the thought, she's charging at him again recklessly, and his lips peel back, hissing in surprise.

A flurry of furious tiny punches are delivered onto his shoulder, and as he rears up in an attempt to counter her swipes in a sort of graceless slap fight, he's forced to cede his prize. "No!" He watches in horror as the mouse vanishes into the underbrush, then levels her the deadliest glare a cub could possibly muster. "Look what you did!" He screams before he attempts to tackle her to the ground.

I pack a little pistol on my pistol beltThe girl paused her slapping as her heart clenched and lurched at the sight of the brown-gray blur writhing free of his grasp and into the field beyond, likely never to be seen again.

Fury rose up as another frustrated shriek from Scarlet when he claims she is the one to lose the moose when he is the one who stole it and tried to keep it in the first place. If he hadn't come and acted like he owned the place, she could have been eating something better than beetles!

Tears threaten to well in her eyes, and the aggressive sneer twisting the girl's face is enough to peel apart the centermost scab trailing across her muzzle. It wept several trickles of red as he pounced at her, sending her tumbling to the ground with a sharp OOF as the wind nearly rushed out from her entirely.

Scarlet's front paws scrabbled in an attempt to sink her needly claws into the boy, trying to bring him down with her and shake his dumb, stupid neck if she could manage it.

His damn food is gone. And it's all her fault!

His accusation is answered with an infuriated shriek, and he barrels into her at full throttle. The impact rocks him, but the adrenaline coursing through his body accounts for the pain as he bulldozes the girl to the ground.

He feels her small claws puncture his skin and emits a tiny, furious roar in pain as he's yanked down to the ground with her. He might not have the vocal range of an adult, but that sure doesn't stop him from showing his discontent. As his legs buckle beneath him and he falls down with her, he attempts to dig his claws into her shoulders to secure her as he slashes his hind legs across the soft and vulnerable tissue of her belly.

Somewhere during the struggle, he smells the blood of an open wound, and although he's not sure whose blood it is, he sure hopes it's hers and that he's responsible for it—just like she's responsible for his empty stomach.

I pack a little pistol on my pistol beltYoung as they are, the disparity between their sizes is still considerable as the two children grappled over food that had already escaped. In Scarlet's red haze of desperate anger, she was hardly aware of how much larger the boy was than she, her only thoughts were consumed by blind, ugly, hungry anger.

When his back paws scrape at her tender belly, a shudder goes through Scarlet as she feels claws slice through the thinner fur there easily. She had seen her mother make kills and divide them up, the processing of a carcass. Was that happening to her? Was her stomach going to be ripped open by his claws like Cemre had torn her face?

Her stomach flip-flops in a sickly way, but it is far from mangled, just scratched as his claws slide over pink flesh to draw up stinging red lines while his foreclaws held her fast.

No! The word is desperate and vicious, screamed like a curse as she thrashed beneath her opponent. She isn't aware of the angry, pained tears that were welling in her eyes, but the pale girl feels their salt as she lurched her weight to one side and attempted to sink her fangs down into one of the forelegs that lingered temptingly close to her face.

His hind legs rip into her belly and he vaguely registers the rill of blood streaming down her face—wondering how it got there, before the thought is forgotten entirely.

Suddenly the annoying girl screams again and begins thrashing, and he scoffs derisively. "Baby!" He accuses, but somehow, he doesn't expect her to go for his foreleg that's enticingly within her reach. Her tiny needle teeth sink into his leg with an unmatched ferocity for someone so small as her, and he cries out in pain, quickly trying to pull the targeted leg back to himself.

He doesn't expect it to sting as much as it does, and he quickly backs down before the afflicted leg buckles beneath him and he plonks heavily onto the ground, pain surging from elbow to toe. Blood tinges the grasses below, and he hisses angrily at the girl, frustrated that he got his tail handed to him by a stupid, tiny, baby.

She barged in, started crying about how she saw it first and now, it seems both of them will go hungry.
