The brown and white creature wandered, but he did so with extreme care to the ground around him. His paws were placed lightly, careful not to disturb the tracks that he followed. Occasionally he would pause, nose drifting close to the ground to get a good scent of wildebeest before he would continue. Tongue would roll over his lips, hungry, maybe his brother would be less upset if he brought home a gift to share. A juicy wildebeest seemed like a good idea, did it not?

He continued the trek, noting how the scent of water grew stronger and stronger. Ears twitched, was that splashing that he heard up ahead. Stalking through the tall grass, he didn’t dare raise to his full height and reveal himself, not yet. Eventually he would have to, but he was hoping that his prey would be much closer by then. Before reaching the break in grass, Ash would pause, slowly rubbing his white face into the damp earth, darkening the bright white to an ugly smeared brown. He hated getting dirty, but it was necessary to blend in.

Slowly, he would creep the edge of grass and then he would lay down, mismatched gaze watching the different herds near the watering hole. Zebra, gazelle, wildebeest, they all gathered for a drink from the swollen watering hole. They did so nervously, they knew what lay in the murky depths just as he did. Ears would flick back for a moment before going forward again.

The many hoofprints and scent of zebra was too inviting for Artemisia to pass by. She hadn't eaten in several days and her belly was beginning to ache with the need to be filled with food, and zebra seemed to be on the menu. Earthen body would stalk forward as she fell into a hunter's crouch, making sure that she was taking each step slow and carefully so that she could be as silent as she possibly could. Every now and again would she look down at the ground, ensuring that she were still following the tracks they left, nose sniffing the air to confirm it.

A small break in the looming grass would show her the many striped equines, the anticipation and thrill of the hunt causing for her body to come alive with adrenaline. Claws would slowly unsheathe as she flexed her toes, poking into the soft ground beneath them, her ears twisting forward to listen to everything around her. If she were more keen to her surroundings, Artemisia would find that she wasn't the only one stalking this herd, but the scent of zebra was overwhelming, and pairing that with an empty stomach she was more focused on picking out which one she was going to chase to realize the male was close by to her.

The beast would slink forward, movement to his right would cause him to freeze, first looking at the movement from the corner of his eye, realizing the shape resembled a lion he would slowly half turn his skull, careful not to move too fast and spook the prey. Ears would flick, she was focused on the same group that he was, maybe they could combine their strength and raise their odds in getting a meal? Ash would shift, moving closer to her so that he could speak without worrying the prey.

“Want to join the hunt?” He would whisper, tone low as he focused back on the zebra and wildebeest ahead of them. She blended in better than he did, maybe he could herd them straight for her? “I can chase, you single one out and we can both take it down?” He asked, it had been so long since he had hunted as a group, it was nice, sinking back into familial habits when it came to hunting. Suggesting a plan and seeing how she would take to it. Maybe she had a better idea?

She was too focused to notice the presence of another until he spoke, causing for her to jerk. Her sudden movement caused her heart to skip a beat, staring at the herds and watching to see if they had seen the abrupt movement. When she was certain that the herd was staying put would Artemisia turn her head to stare at the stranger who joined her, eyes narrowing and fur bristling slightly. But before she could speak her disgruntlement would he go instead, asking if she would like to join him on the hunt and then slipping into giving directions. The woman would wait a moment, processing the idea in her head, and ultimately she would give him a quick nod. Two lions had a better chance of bringing something down than one. I haven't eaten in a couple of days so help won't be so bad, she would comment in a hushed tone, eyes now glancing back at the prey before them.

Artemisia would allow for her nose to guide her once more, stalking her way closer inch by inch, glancing down at the ground to see which tracks she was following every now and again. But a stray twig would be stepped upon by a back paw, and with the cracking sound it let out did that alert the prey that they weren't alone. Both zebra and wildebeest would begin to bellow and bray, alerting the rest that they were not safe and starting a stampede. Artemisia would keep low and out of the way, letting out a hiss of frustration at the failed hunt. But wait. A hippo would appear through the many fleeing bodies, and with hunger driving her instead of logic would she race her way toward it, weaving and hurdling over both bodies and landscape.

She would near the rotund mammal, and with a snarl would she leap at it, claws unsheathed as her front limbs extended. Landing on its back with her claws hooking into the thick skin would she try her best to hold on as the hippo grunt and roar, thrashing about in its attempt to throw her off. Artemisia would hold on for a while, her jaws clamping down on the rolls on its neck, but the hold would not last long. With a sudden jerk would the hippo rear, almost toppling itself over. The thought made the earthen woman release her hold and fall onto her back with a thud and a grunt, scrambling to get back on all fours. With wide eyes would she jump backward and then to her left, narrowly missing the dangerous gaping mouth of the hippo. With another hiss would she begin to run as fast as she could away from the hippo, oblivious to see whether or not the stranger joined her on her dangerous hunt.

The lioness wouldn't stop until she were a far away from the hippo, sides heaving as she panted and tried to regain normal breathing. Disappointment would begin to seep into her, her stomach growling as if on queue to remind her of the brainless attempt at trying to feed herself.

She would jerk at his sudden closeness- even though it had been her own fault. His breath would catch, focusing on the herd just like she did. Fortunately, they seemed unaware of the lurking danger in the grass, they were too focused on what lay in the water. She seemed irked as she regarded him, but that would quickly shift as his words would process. She nodded, hushed tones agreeing on the help, commenting she hadn’t eaten in a few days. That was unfortunate- for her. It made him want to take one down even more now.

They would set off, Ash following her lead, but she was not careful, a twig would snap and he would freeze, silently cursing as the prey became alerted. The braying and bellowing would put everything on edge, ruining the hunt. Or so he thought. He was already relaxing when a larger creature came through the fleeing creatures. A hippo. It was far too large for them to take down, but the woman would launch herself into a chase and he cursed again, but he would follow her pursuit- even if it was foolish and stupid.

The ferocity of the woman would not go unnoticed as they quickly caught up to the beast, she snarled, launching herself at the beast with claws unsheathed. She hooked into its skin, hanging on as it whirled, trying to get her off. Ash would launch himself, staying away from the front end, he would try to throw it off balance by adding his weight to one hind leg just as it reared up, almost falling over.

His heart would race, panic pumping adrenaline into his system. The creature continued and the woman continued to combat the hippo, Ash would be knocked loose. Rolling in the dirt back to his paws he would glance briefly as she danced to the side, narrowly missing its powerful, gaping jaws. She would hiss and then turn and run. Fuck this. Ash would whirl around and run as well, ears pressed back into the thick of his mane as he went. It was long after the hippo had stopped chasing them that they came to a stop, both heaving and gasping for breath.

“That…was…stupid.” He would say between panting breaths, but if she were to cast a look at him she would find him grinning. Thrilled by the rush of adrenaline, although disappointed that they both had to go hungry tonight. As his breath returned to normal he would look back the way they had come, he had no intention of trying that again. “Guess it's another night without a meal, eh?” He asked, saddened by the idea as much as she was. His own stomach was beginning to growl, protesting the missed opportunity. It was fine, they would have a chance another day. “Can’t believe you were just going to leave me though, after I planned on sharing.” He would tease, somewhat. A warning that she was dipping out would have been nice.

The hippo seemed to be making its way back to the water, despite their efforts it barely seemed wounded due to its thick blubbery hide. That was embarrassing.

Hearing the heavy thudding paw steps behind her would cause Artemisia to pivot, watching as the male trailed after her. So he did help her. She found it a bit humorous that he would follow her into such a dangerous situation, but it gave her enough reason to stick around instead of shrugging him off and go in search for food once again. Stupid, but fun. A half laugh would trace her words, cherry gaze watching him with slight bemusement. When he mentioned another night with no food would only cause for the smirk that curled her lips to pull into a subtle frown, head shaking back and forth a couple of times.

I can't go another night, she would finally comment, a paw scuffing at the ground. Not having eaten in several days was beginning to drive her insane, with the constant gnawing feeling in her belly. I've been off my game lately. I'm usually not this clumsy when hunting. The disappointment in herself would only grow, and all Artemisia could do was roll her shoulders to try to relax herself.

Only when the dark brown lion would mention how she was going to leave him behind would her mood lighten just a fraction. In my defense I didn't know you were going to follow me. Because any other logical lion would have either stayed put or turned tail to not watch whatever disaster could have happened.
