i saw your heartbeat in the radium screen,
There is pain when she wakes, as there always is, but this time it's worse. She remembers, then; the fall, and the sound of Hillevi's frantic howl. With a groan, she does her best to heft her bulk upright, swaying unsteadily. She doesn't dare try to stand, not so soon after breaking her leg. Looking at it, she knows it's a little more than simply broken. Her muzzle curls in an irate fashion at the knowledge, rage coursing through her veins alongside the fire and ice that take turns burning her from the inside out. Fucking piece of shit, she hisses, and she half wishes the bastard she'd fought were still alive if only so she could take her anger out on his flesh. A violent and no doubt cruel impulse, sure. She doesn't care, though. @Hazel - set after her fall, maybe a few days later? what does a body mean?

Fall
Though the air is still warm and the sun is bright, the summer is beginning to wane and, with it, the humidity has started to die down. It is a welcomed relief for the inhabitants of the jungle, as more moderate weather will mean that the rainforest will not feel quite as stifling, as well as those from the desert, who's early autumn will see calm winds and mild nights. For the rest of the peninsula, the change in seasons will be gradual, hinting towards the colder months that are soon to come.

Hazel comes and goes, leaving instructions for Hillevi on how to best look after @Minna. Despite the rough exterior, there is true love between the girls, and Hazel knows she leaves her patient in capable paws. Without taking them back to Andal, this is the best she can do. Her children come first, and the druid always returns to them.
She arrives this morning to the delightful sound of cursing. Her eyes roll around their sockets as she stalks into the dark, quickly finding Minna awake and alert and moving about. That won’t do at all.

Stay there, the lioness says around her bundle of leaves and herbs wrapped up in a large skin, a far cry from the gentle tone she’d used when first finding her. No, that medic is replaced with her usual self, now that she’s sure the girl will live and heal and does not need to be babied.
If you put your weight on your leg wrong, it will need resetting, and that will fucking hurt.

i saw your heartbeat in the radium screen,
The arrival of @Hazel - and the media's subsequent words - is met with a sneer that turns quickly to a grimace. It already hurts, she grumbles, voice rough and low. After a moment, though, she decides to venture a question. Hey, you know about plants and stuff, smooth, Minna, could you... I dunno, teach me? She knows a bit, mostly from accidentally poisoning herself, but she wants to learn. I want to be a medic as well as an outlaw, she adds, looking suddenly sheepish. My shield sisters get hurt sometimes, and... I don't know enough to really help heal them. She can keep the wounds clean, prevent infection, but she isn't at the skill level she wants to be at. She wants to be like Hazel, like Calypso - sure and confident and knowledgeable. It's worth a shot asking, isn't it? At worst, it's a no. She'd hate to know how vulnerable she seems now. what does a body mean?

If the sneer is meant to intimidate, or threaten, it does not affect the druid that way. Instead she sighs as if dealing with her most feral child’s temper tantrum. She busies herself preparing her pre-made potions, things for the pain and swelling and to fight infection in the cuts on Minna’s body. Thankfully, Minna is saved from the motherly lecture by settling down and calming herself, following up with an awkward question that Hazel struggles not to smile at. It’s cute.
I do know about plants and stuff. She answers with a shrug, as if her life’s work can be just summarised so easily like that. She can’t deny that, yes, having a medic on hand in a band would be useful. And passing on her knowledge is part of her beliefs.
I’ll teach you.She agrees after a moment, sliding her skin satchel toward the girl.
I’m going to check your leg, and then if there’s swelling I’ll give you this -she nudges a paste of leaves and berries,
and these are seeds, painkillers. You can have three now, but anymore and you’ll fall asleep.

i saw your heartbeat in the radium screen,
Minna has a pouch of her own in which she carries what little herbs she knows how to use, but Hazel's is much more impressive. She absorbs the information offered with ears at attention, her eyes bright and more eager than she would have preferred. She doesn't like letting it be known that she cares, and the look on her face is too interested for her tastes.Unfortunate that she doesn't realize it, then. Carefully, she scoops up three of the painkillers and grimaces as she swallows them. How come medicine can't ever taste good? She asks, not really expecting an answer. The usual rhetoric is because it's medicine or because it's good for you, and don't both of those reasons kinda suck? How come things that are good for you have to seem so bad? what does a body mean?

Proving to be a good patient, Minna eats the seeds and Hazel laughs at the look on her face.
Minna’s leg is swollen, but not overly so. Hazel tsks softly and reaches for the paste she’d made before coming, carefully smearing it over the leg.
Fucked if I know, she admits lightly, settling at the girl’s side to begin unwrapping her broken leg to inspect.
Maybe so that we don’t eat them unless we need to?She has no idea, and she doesn’t care - it works, that’s what matters most.

This will help with the pain and swelling, she says softly, and then begins listing off the plants it is made of.
When you can walk, I’ll show you where they grow. You can visit Andal, my garden there, when the drought breaks and I have grow it again.Actually, Minna would be good to help her do that.

i saw your heartbeat in the radium screen,
it's refreshing to have someone admit they don't know why. it's even more refreshing that she's offering a more plausible explanation instead of useless platitudes. that makes sense, she says, and there's a childlike consideration in her tone. she pays attention as hazel continues teaching her, green eyes attentive and ears up. should i see about growing a garden?she imagines it would be useful to have a variety of herbs on hand, but she wonders if there's a good spot for growth here in the tunnels. she'd have to take into consideration the fact that the tunnels fill with water during some parts of the day, and figure out where to build her garden, but... it would be good to have one. she wouldn't have to hunt herbs down then. what does a body mean?

"Yeah, once you have somewhere stable and secure to live. You’ll need sun and fresh water close by. Gardens are a lot of work, and you need to keep tending to them." She cannot stress that enough, but Hazel… also enjoys talking about her work, and Minna is clearly interested.
"Not everything will grow where you want it, so you’ll have to dry some out and ration over the winter." The druid adds as she finishes up rewrapping Minna’s leg with fresh leaves and a clean salve. But that isn't the only injury Hazel is concerned about. She looks up at the girl, peering into the damaged face and squinting. "How's your head feeling?"

i saw your heartbeat in the radium screen,
I've been thinking about setting up here, she admits softly, frowning a little. the tunnels don't exactly offer sunlight and fresh water, but she could always have her garden somewhere else. hazel's words about rationing leave minna somewhat concerned - she'll need to do that soon, with all the insane weather that's happening right now. the elder medic asks after her head, though, and minna blinks at her for a second. oh! um, sorta fuzzy, admits the skagosi, frowning a bit. it hurts a bit, and sometimes i have trouble thinking. it takes a little longer for words to form than it did before she fell off the peak, but she supposes some after-effects are to be expected from a head injury. especially a head injury caused by falling off a fuckin mountain, at that.what does a body mean?

"Not that you asked, but this wouldn’t be my first choice to set up - I’m assuming with Hillevi?" The girl that had all but threatened Hazel to keep Minna alive had barely left her patient’s side, but the druid had hardly blinked at that. She’s used to such things when emotions run high and fast. Whatever Minna decides, however, is her choice entirely. Hazel won’t try to sway her choice anymore than what she’d said already. She does frown when Minna explains her symptoms. "Rest should fix that. Food, fresh air when you can move a little easier, and rest." If it didn’t clear up in a few days, they could worry about that then. No point in stressing the young woman more than needed. "You’re all done for today, my dear," Hazel adds as she begins packing up. "I’ll leave you some seeds to eat at dusk, which will help you sleep. I’ll be back tomorrow." Hazel offers a soft smile before departing, leaving Minna to rest. Exit. |
