It was early morning and Tomas had already risen from his slumber. He'd slipped out of the comfort of Obsidian Hollow and ventured out into the neutral lands that the peninsula had to offer. Lavender eyes watched carefully as his paws seemed to lead him into the abyss of scorched wilds, a land that seemed to be milestones away from the concept of re-birth and instead much closer to death. There was a smell here that Tomas could not describe - but it was one that made him miserable.

Strawberry paws pad carefully through the mist-heavy territory, which seemed much thicker than normal. He paused briefly as he realized that it actually wasn't mist lingering in the air, but instead smoke. It began to burn his eyes and choke-hold his throat, but he pushed on. The Casales wanted to know what it was causing the smoke, since it was normally mist that lingered here. It takes him a moment to identify the wildfire in the distance, but the distinct orange glow catches his attention and curious as he is, he begins to walk closer toward it.

Closer to the fire there is something, someone, that seems to not belong here. This is a landscape of grey and warm colors, the heats of red and orange. Huddled into a ball, frightened, is something blue. Her face is smudged with grey ash as she turns it away from the nearby flame creeping up on her. She is seeming frozen in fear, trying to hide herself from the fire in a futile hope this scary presence will go away. It is warm, she can feel the licking of the heat on her bronze toes and the top of her head. It roars and crackles like a monster would. Dio has seen nothing of this before.

As Tomas travels closer to the fire in the distance, he begins to notice just how warm it is despite the lengths between him and the beast. It is intriguing, but Tomas knows that he should not get too close because fire can burn and destroy - but he does find it curious how the surrounding air was thick with smoke, and that made it hard to see.

As he walks further, he stumbles over something small and blue. It causes him to stop because it was certainly was not a rock, because it felt more... squidgy. Tomas turns to look, and spots @Diomedeidae, who looked quite scared by the roaring flames in the distance. The strawberry babe stops and lowers himself to the ground, so that he is quite close to her. Hey - sorry about kicking you. The smoke makes it hard to see. Are you alright? He asks, concerned for her.

She is transfixed by the bright dancing fires, by the swirls of light and the trails of black ashen smoke they left behind. In her soul she felt the destruction and it hurt. Wait... no she actually felt something run into her. It is another younger lion, one rosy and who looked like he had some of the soot over his face. No. She says in a little voice, her bright teal eyes cracking open as @Tomas's shadow fell over her and blocked some of the heat and light both from the surrounding fires. The numb ache in her body from Tomas running into her is nothing compared to the distress she felt from the situation. I'm scared. She said in a mumble now as one paw, brightly streaked with bronze, lifted up and over her muzzle, face, and eyes. It was evident that @Diomedeidae was scared, and if Tomas had engaged his brain, he would have known this. As he lowers his form down to the sooty ground, he feels as though he instinctively needs to protect her, and so he attempts to draw her figure closer to his. Her small voice is swallowed by the roar of the fire behind them, and the heat is beginning to put the strawberry child on edge. It's okay, He whispers as the girl puts a bronze paw over her face. I can look after you. What is your name? Mine is Tomas. He comments, trying to reassure her as best as he could.

The air she sucked in was starting to get thicker, it stung the back of her throat and brought forth a resounding cough that shook her frame down to its core. Hot, even the air felt hot and it was starting to stifle her, gave her this panicked feeling of being smothered. It didn't help that @Tomas drew in close but better him than the fire. Diomede-mede-mede- Her voice trembled. Dio. It was easier anyways. In the best of times her name was difficult on her young tongue.

Maua please protect us. She mumbled and nestled in closer to Tomas, trying to nudge him with her nose while she stood. Urge him to move off with her to somewhere safer.

In the back of his mind, Tomas was acutely aware of the heat that was getting closer and closer to them both. The smoke that surrounded them was getting thicker, and the strawberry child was finding it much harder to breathe. The smoke stung his eyes, but he was determined that he was not going anywhere without @Diomedeidae. Dio, He repeated, hoping that he got her nickname right. We should... go... elsewhere, He remarks in between coughs and splutters as the smoke continued to loom. Rising to his paws and turning his crown to look at the flames that seemed to engulf everything around them, lavender eyes looked down at the blue lioness. I'll protect you when we move... I promise. I'll burn first before you, He comments boldly, and then stands in front of her to protect her from the fire before moving to the edge of the scorched wilds.

Elsewhere. Yes. Her bright eyes seemed to light up like lamps and she nodded her head quickly up and down. But then rapidly her face looked surprised, her jaw dropped a little and stammered as she fought for words. He'd get burned for her? But- Her gut reaction to the sacrifice he was willing to make for her. You barely know me. The fire roared and crackled, Dio winced against the surge of heat and she began to move away from the billowing smoke and to cooler air. -Ok. This way. She ducked her head down and began the fearsome trek away. Baring with her guilt that Tomas might be hurt.

Would his father be proud of his sacrifice, if he were to burn to his death? Would that be admirable in the eyes of the Casales, and as a result, the Tolkien? Or would it be heartbreak too much for his parents to endure? The questions did not enter the young boy's head as he selfishly puts himself in the way of danger so that @Diomedeidae could survive and live out her days. Tomas had always been kind, caring and considerate, so why, when faced with danger, would he be any different? The fear is evident in Dio's eyes, and her body, and Tomas knew that he needed to get her elsewhere - no questions asked.

The flames behind them continued to crackle and roar louder, almost at a deafening scream, as they began to move away. He is conscious of Dio's movements and tries his very hardest to remain close enough to her to keep her safe: but in the process and in his determination, Tomas ends up stepping on a loose cluster of hot ember that quickly burnt his front right paw. The pain seared through his leg and up into the pit of his stomach, inducing a feeling of sickness he had never felt before. But despite wincing, Tomas continued until Dio was safely out of the path of the red flower.

A little to the side, she feels the surge of heat while @Tomas unfortunately wakes sleeping embers. It's not so hot as the walls of flames but it is close. A dancing trail of red and orange light comes up in her vision and it causes her to momentarily stop in her tracks. Bright eyes turned to him, wet in the corners from the stinging smoke and ash caught in her gaze. Tomas... c'mon. She urged him along, vocals still trembling and scared.

But gradually the roaring of fire was growing softer, the blue of the sky was coming through the grey and ash spit up by the fire. And Dio took the biggest breath of clean air that she could to much relief. You got hurt. She said both apologetically and certain of what she'd seen._{CODE | BACKGROUND | ART BY MUULAND}
