something is... amiss.

that is plainly obvious. the air is still at the moment, terribly still, and it does not fill him with much confidence. a storm was brewing but this one did not seem to include thunder or lightning. the sky is so grey that it bleeds into the horizonline, blending and blurring until they're one in the same. the lake here, too, has jumped its bank — the frozen water extending far past its natural boundaries. some might look at it and assume it to be an ill-omen, but absalon was keen to get to the bottom of it.

he would not do it alone, though.

tilting his head back the larsen all but howls, a carrying chuff intent to reach his cousins' ears. he knows @Hartvig and @Norell have come here already, as he and matty had lagged behind. they were here now, though, and curious to see what the twins had learned in their absence. he chuffs again for good measure before lowering their haunches to the ground below, ignoring the snow's biting cold. keeping an eye on the horizon for the twins, and for the impending storm.

Travel across the island had been slow yet persistent, though he hadn't yet found himself acquainted with any of the lions here. With @Norell in tow he'd headed towards the call of their cousin, elated that they'd finally found their way onto the island. Pale eyes would seek out the familiar form of @Absalon against the dreary backdrop of mountainous region, followed by the alarming mental notation of the lake's seeming expansion. Cloudy locks flowed around his silver face, floating as he came to a sudden stop on a small rise above the lake. "Vandet stiger."¹ A concerned look was tossed towards his twin, wondering if it were safe to descend to Absalon's side. Lips puffed out in a huff as his paws tipped over the ledge and he began the descent anyway - there was no use for cowards here and if Absalon would take the risk then so would he.

"Watch your footing," he instructed hastily as his paws slipped, still intent upon the rising water of the mountain lake. Each step brought him closer to the sandy male that called to them, though he was wary not to step too near the water with the angry brewing of dark, near black, storm clouds above them. Thunder rolled across the heavens, pricking his backside as he glanced back towards his sister to ensure her safety. Risk everything except her.

Close enough to speak amiably to their cousin, he drew to a halt against the swelling of the lake before them. "Hej kusine, hvordan har du det?"² A reunion felt jovial enough but the promise of a storm surrounding them left a grim impression.

steel grey eyes scan the landscape, sweeping across the strangely twisted terrain. it seemed more than just one storm had affected this place. it was as if the tundra had suffered multiple — but surely that could not be the case, right? that would be nigh impossible, or at the very least, very unlikely. it’d be a back run of luck, and seemingly one that they were walking straight into.

finally he catches movement — up on one of the slopes he spots @Hartvig and @Norell, and a smile turns their lips. even from the distance it is good to see their cousins — silver-furred and brawny, a matching set. it doesn’t appear as though time ( nor travel ) had done much to change the two of them, and absalon chuffs when they are close enough to hear.

bare fint, fætter, tak. (just fine, cousins, thank you.) the larsen replies easily, ears tipping forward. his own side feels emptier without mathias, but surely their brother will make his own entrance soon. it was a quiet reunion to be sure, but this is what they were meant for. and speaking of… og dig? hvordan har vejret behandlet dig? ( and you? how has the weather treated you? ) elke had mentioned the strange weather patterns recently were atypical — hopefully the two of them had not suffered for it.

The weather was a monstrosity, Norell dare thought that this was quite possibly the worst she had seen it yet in her four years of life. And normally when the weather was this bad it was a surefire sign that it was trying to tell everyone something. She followed dutifully behind her twin, being careful to watch her steps as the slopes were extremely icy. One wrong move could send her or @Hartvig toppling over the side and that certainly wouldn't be what they needed. Eventually the shape of their cousin comes into view and even she cannot help the broad smile that graces her feminine features as she glances towards them. Hartvig speaks and a petite ear tips forwards, listening intently before @Absalon replies. 'just fine, cousins, thank you. and you? how has the weather treated you?' "Forfærdeligt nok er dette værre end hjemme på mange måder." "Horribly, this is worse than home in many ways." She chides before finally pulling to a halt alongside her brother. The wind whipped around them and howled in her ears but her focus was instead upon her cousin. "Hvad tror du, det betyder?" "What do you think it means?" She wondered then, sparing a glance towards Hartvig all the while.

They didn't think they could have their meeting without him, did they?

Annoying kid brother in a burly adults body, Mathias lumbered forth, out of the pinewood undergrowth and up towards the rocky waters edge. "Hej," he called out, seeking to gain the attention not only of his littermate but of his two cousins, who - it had to be said - he had sorely missed. Expression fell a little as he moved to stand alongside his brown-pelted sibling, noting the rising waters and angry-looking sky. They were no strangers to poor weather, nor did they shy away from it, but it was obvious that - whatever this was - it was not normal. "Nå, er det ikke dystert?" he grumbled, demeanour dour. It was hardly the welcome he'd wished for, but no matter. Shifting his attention to @Norell, then, he would be quick to respond to her question with his own theory. "Jeg tror, fætter, det betyder, at vi ikke får en let tur her. Der tænkte jeg, at vi måske havde fundet en opgradering." We should be so lucky.

everyone seems understandably flustered — and worried. it did not bode well. indeed, he agrees with norell — it was worse than their homeland. not qutie that they were looking for in a new address. what if the rest of this island was like this? they could live here, absolutely, but could they thrive here? they had not come in search of greener pastures ( unlike what @Mathias might hint at ), but rather a place to make thier own. a shame, then, that this place has so much wrong with it.

i don’t think the land is always like this, he murmurs, gesturing with a pointed nod towards where the water has jumped the banks. namely, the fact that he could see where the typical shoreline was. that was a good sign, wasn’t it? perhaps we’ve come in the wake of a storm. a, er, big one. a really big one if it’s effected everything so grimly. a frown curves his lips then, pulling his expression taut. we can stay here regardless, if you would like — we can make it work while we rest. they could sleep in shifts if need-be. with that haughty expression still fixed in place, he turns to matty, brow quirking. what do you think?

@Absalon, in his infinite wisdom, would turn to gesture at the expanse of water at their heels. His theory is that the land is not always this way, and that perhaps they have come in the wake of a bad storm - or the midst of one, depending on how much of a pessimist you were. Mathias chose to try and be positive, and latched onto the idea that this was only a temporary blip in an otherwise rather liveable territory. It certainly seemed nice enough, from what he'd seen of it; if you looked past the foul weather and natural disasters, that is. So he would nod affably to the sentiment of his littermate, offering a subtle nudge of the shoulder in agreement. "I think we could, definitely." He tilted his head in thought. "Next step would be to make base camp somewhere, unless that's been done already?" After all, Abs, @Norell and @Hartvig had all been here a little longer than he had. The idea of not having a base with all these storms happening... it wouldn't sit right with him. They needed somewhere to go back to, if they lost track of anyone. Somewhere they could feel at least relatively safe - just while they settled. From there, they could forge a proper game plan.

This place did not need to be perfect. It did not even need to be permanent. It just needed to be safe enough, secure enough, to house them for a time. Until they could rest and recoup, until they were able to get their strength up snd continue on. Trying again was in their blood, their DNA -- they would not turn around at one bad storm.

Even if this stork seemed to be blanket the entire island.

An ear shifts as Mathias continues, and though he should probably wait for their cousins to interject, absalon doesn't. Instead, what he does, is say this: we could stay here for now. There's plenty of water and shelter. Food would be a little harder to come by and it was cold, but they've suffered through that before. No difference between then and now. We could scout around, find the best place to hunker down. Brunette ears pitch forward then, intent -- looking to his younger brother.

Because they'd be on the same team, no doubt.

Of course his brother agreed with him. Mathias had the best ideas. In their typical way, they may have steamrolled @Hartvig and @Norell a little, but it was a healthy mix of enthusiasm and a need to get things done. Especially at a time like this. And there was no time like the present, right? So, when @Absalon suggested making this their base - which Mathias could get behind - for now, and then scouting around to see if they could find better prospects. If this phenomena really was only a short-term issue, it wouldn't take them long to uncover the true potential of this place. As Absalon looked to him pointedly, Mathias nodded and gestured for the pair to head off. He looked to his cousins, arching a brow expectantly. "We'll cover more ground if we split, so I suppose we'll see you soon. Stay safe out there, okay?" And then, with a smile and an affable flick of the tail, the dusky pelted Larsen sought to lead the way for he and his brother.

Be safe, they echo their brother's sentiment. He turns his gaze to each cousin in turn, seeking to hold their gaze and impress this with severity. They know the cousins know this but it still feels important to impress the seriousness -- this place was unfamiliar, and in the throes of a serious storm. If you need anything, call us at ocne. Theyve been separated before; they will not be separated again. Besides, you know, this quick adventure. Flicking his tail he turns towards his brother, gesturing for him to follow. Or lead. Whatever. Absalon wasn't picky at the moment. As they go, he takes special care to note the boundries of the land -- natural and otherwise. They couldn't be too careful, not until they knew what was going on.
