It was early.

The air was crisp, sharp, and as Ilarion stepped out of the warmth of his den and into the early morning, he could feel the bite of it in his bones. Winter was not far away. What better way to warm himself up than to visit one of his favourite spots? The large brute found himself treading the familiar path to the Pit without hesitation, olive stare scanning the horizon for any sign - or scent - of life. He paused at the cusp of the arena, looking down into the cavern. Nothing. For now, anyway. Dawn was... still. Almost peaceful. What a shame, then, to potentially disrupt it. No matter. He would move to the centre, shifting easily into a defensive posture - legs spread and braced, head lowered - as he called out for someone to face him. His wounds from the last brawl had long healed.

Time to reopen them.

With the sun slowly peeking over the horizon, Icefang took that as her sign to head back home. She had been restless, slipping out of the brook and the grove for the first time since she has given birth. It had been good to stretch and even better to avoid the suffocating clutch that motherhood often brought her, gluing her to her children's' sides during the first few months of life. Singular eye remains alert, ears shifting on top her crown as she approaches the pit on her way back to the grove. His call captures her attention and the queen strides to the edge, peering down at the large male placed at its core. Hm, he was familiar as she recalls that one hunt she interfered on. Icefang shifts away quietly and finds one of the many paths to take her down, purposefully she moves down and approaches from behind attempting to ambush him. Once she is placed inside the crater, she launches forward attempting to stay light on her paws, attempting to throw herself onto his back, jaws attempting to latch at the base of his spine as if he were prey. Front paws attempt to seek a grip on his sides.

There is not enough time for him to react to the sudden approach of his assailant from behind. Some could consider her trick of sneaking up on him to be dirty, but Ilarion was not precious enough to get sensitive about it. Most fights ended up dirty, no matter how noble most liked to pretend to be. When he turned on his heel with a snarl, pivoting to his right, his hide flexed against the sharp curved claws that hook into his side. Blood bloomed from the punctures, already seeping into his fur and trickling downwards, creating damp scarlet trails in their wake. Spittle flew from his lips as, with head craned around, he attempted to snap at Icefang's right side, striving for fangs to snag and anchor into whatever flesh of his opponent he could reach - whether it be a limb or a section of belly. As he hadn't managed to get eyes on her, he did not recognise her the way she recognised him. Her scent is awfully familiar, though, and even in the heat of battle it will not take him long to twig. The bulk of the large lioness already begins to strain his back, and with the momentum of his turn he sought to shake and buck her off, like an angry bull.

A wild snarl escapes her when she makes contact with his body. The colossal male jerks beneath her, his flesh dancing under the sharp pinch of her talons as they break skin and draw blood. She is an excellent huntress and fighter, so when he throws his body to buck her off, she attempts to dig her nails in deeper trying to shift her body with his motions and prevent being kicked off. His head spins and turns to snatch at her side and Icefang growls feeling the sharp pinch as her own blood seeps from her fur, the pallid hairs stained a dark red. With the proximity of his face to her side, the queen throws her head at him as well attempting to snap her jaws at his cheek. "Surprise!" she cries out, ears pinned and lips pulled back to show her glorious fangs.

The intoxicating aroma of blood filled his senses, the metallic tang settling on his tongue and trickling down his chin. Her own fangs snag at his cheek and along the hard edge of his jaw, canines tearing at the delicate skin there. A loud, low snarl bubbled in his chest. He caught a glimpse of @Icefang ♔, now, in his peripheral vision; white fur, scarred visage and a clouded eye. He knew this woman. She had interjected herself so readily - and antagonistically - into his hunt, so it was no surprise that she would come here with such vigour and ferocity. Ilarion welcomed it. Round two. As she bore her teeth in a macabre, reddened grin, Ilarion would tilt his bloodied crown in her direction and aim to headbutt her straight in the mouth with the hard top of his skull. Perhaps it would daze her, or wind her, just enough for him to shrug her off. He didn't like this game of Bucking Bronco nearly as much as he imagined that she did.

What was it lately with headbutting? His skull slams into her mouth and the queen's blood stained grin falters immediately. She growls, shaking her head at the tingling sensation of pain in her teeth. It jerks her enough to loosen her and rather than tumble off she leaps to the side away from him as she lands hard onto her paws. Quickly, she is pivoting to face him again and leaps in to an attempt snap her jaws at his side close to his thigh, trying to use her smaller size to dart in and aim at a spot that would require him to turn with greater effort to retaliate against her.

After a fair bit of effort, he'd managed to dislodge the thorny Queen from his back. Rivulets of red bloom in the place where her paws were wedged into his side, puncture wounds open and angry. Fucking hell. Both sides, too - so it'd sting regardless of what position he slept in tonight. The blur of white pivots on the ground beside him, and her fangs sink into the skin near his thigh. It burns unpleasantly, only encouraging him to give a fiercer retaliation than before. He hadn't been pulling his punches by any means, but nothing motivated ferocity quite like pain did. The turn did require greater effort than if she had been within easy grabbing distance - no doubt as @Icefang ♔ anticipated - but he would give it all the same; the final throes of his stamina before he inevitably gave out. Whirling upon her position with a snarl, Ilarion would seek to latch his front paw, with claws extended, into the flat blade of her shoulder. Simultaneously, the lion would part his jaws and attempt to bury long canines into the exposed flesh covering the side of Icefang's pale nape.

Serpentine figure weaves away from @Ilarion ♔ avoiding his last duo of attacks. Icefang grins, gloating in her prophesized glory stepping back to soak the larger male in her blue hue. "The master wins again," she purrs throwing a tease to when she had interrupted the hunt and taken down the prey for him and his...friends. "Ahh, now what would you children do without me?" Without my guidance and teaching? Screw his age. They were all babies to her. Desperate for her aid to navigate through the world. As she has demonstrated for him twice now. "I hope I didn't hurt you too much," she hums taking a moment to admire her word and the fresh, bleeding scratches she has planted upon his chocolate pelt.

He can tell when he is bested. He feels it, in the way his body starts to fold beneath the force of @Icefang ♔ and her movements. She is a gloater, that's for sure; that's not much of a surprise. His lip curled a little, but no growl accompanied it. There's no real malice there; mostly because the High Sovereign didn't seem intent on causing real harm. A few scratches here and there were nothing between warriors. Ilarion flexed his sore muscles as he rose, regarding Icefang with an arched brow. "Well, would you look at that," he rumbled, lightly accented words a little barbed but lacking any real nastiness or malice. "It's been a long time since I've been called a child." The brute sniffed, glancing down at his wounds. "No, nothing too drastic." He smiled, then, as his attention shifted across to the lacerations he'd made on her own hide - he could make barbed comments too. The verbal sparring was just as entertaining as the physical coming-to-blows was.
