Her stomach moaned. Anniston perked up from her lounging spot with a glower, her expression falling the moment she remembered the cache was still empty. Right.

The new heiress gathered herself to her paws with a groan, wasting no time before she let out a summons for her army to assemble and help pull their weight. As she stalked through the grasses, she impressed a trail upon her path so that it might be more easily followed for others. Even as she took up her hunter's stance, she glanced around her impatiently for her horde to arrive, her tail twitching lowly behind her.

Aurochs wanted new food, but he didn't want to go through the trouble of getting it. Working with others would help split the work in his favor, aka he wouldn't have to think or plan, just obey. And hopefully his orders would simply involve waiting somewhere and looking scary while the smaller lionesses did the actual running and snapping part. He grumbled and stretched to his paws anyway, bemoaning the loss of a nap.

He recognized her voice @Anniston and that bossy manner. And her trail, a tamped-down little ravine through the grass. Aurochs sniffed at it and then elected to follow a different trail, heading the same general direction. This one was clear from many beaten hooves, though none recent; it followed the middle trace of one of the many rolling hills. "There's an easier path over here," he noted, not sure if she was going the hard way because she had found something to track.

Of course @Anniston would run the hunt, he noted at the call to gather them rang across the plains. Toes stretched out beneath the golden sun as that lustrous nap abruptly ended. Molten eyes fluttered open, limbs raising the deep grey youth to bronzed tinted paws, before he moved to join his sister at her meeting of claws.

Another familiar face was there, @Aurochs, who seemed to be poking around an area that might be useful to the hunt. It was good to see familiar faces about the plains just as much as it was to be back. Everything felt a bit too perfect in life at the moment, aside from his bossy sister receiving authority over them all besides their dad.

Seemed like they were just standing around, not engaging in anything relatively important enough to disrupt napping. What are we waiting for?

As the first signs of dawn stirred upon the horizon, Violarum was waking from a short slumber; unfurling himself gracelessly from an otherwise empty den he had once shared with his wife. A dramatic yawn might have drowned out Anniston's summons had it not echoed faintly from a nearby tree.

So, always the obedient servant to his children's whims, Violarum meanders languidly in the wake of @Hendrix; greeting him with the slap of a paw to his shoulder - "Food." He would answer, as if he had somehow grown wiser. A lowly chuff to his daughter and Aurochs, and the King would settle in to eat.

As dusk reared up over the horizon, Birdie was already up and about; sauntering easily along the borders as if in search of something she had yet to decide. White-lined ears flicked idly between twitters, duo-tone eyes following the occasional flutter of bird wings.

When Anniston called, she was not all too far away - and supposed she ought to show up for a chance to feed her plentiful curves. The youth arrived at an easy trot and spared her elder sister a knowing smirk, settling in on the sidelines. She hoped it was zebra on the menu today, she'd been feeling something ripe and wholesome.

Rising from the grass, the beast seemed to materialized some like giant leviathan from the deep. He spent much of his time lurked nearby wherever the Heiress happened to be and today was no different. He responded to her summons, lumbering along to fall into pace alongside the others. He noted the way the plum lioness lead the group of big males, her father and brother and the enigmatic Aurochs. He thought it suited her, the empress, and a deep rumble vibrated his chest in appreciation of the sight.

Perhaps he should have felt ashamed that as Lead Hunter, he was not at the head of the group. But he served Anniston first and foremost, and she had called the hunt. There would be plenty of hunts to come, when the herds recovered from the unbalance left behind by the false king. Their caches would grow, hopefully starting today.

however low-stakes the current circumstance, olive still finds wariness in heeding the heiress’ call.

paws trudge with obvious uncertainty as she trails in the wake of gathering peers, adhering to their well-carved pathway with a quiet diligence. and though her arrival is belated at the fault of lingering guilt – guilt revolving around @Anniston, herself – there is little inclination to such feeling offered in the empty grin she showcases. rather, there is overcompensation for the fractured state of their friendship given with an attempted brush of their shoulders, and again with the soft chuff she extends to the frei girl in greeting. and as she hunkers down with senses trained upon their prey, olive can only hope to do more of the heavy lifting to alleviate some of the burdens weighing down her companion; and, in turn, alleviate the stressors impacting their relationship so that they may retain a semblance of normalcy.

When the hunting party came upon the rhinoceros calf, Orson would pause. Keen sensed were trained ahead of him, scanning the area for the calf's mother. Rhinoceros were dangerous animals on a good day... but get between a calf and its mother and one could find themselves fatally gored. But Orson could sense no presence of the adult. It was another disappointment... he had hunted elephants with these comrades, and it seemed their quest to fill the cache was always coming up just short of the biggest prizes. Orson wanted something big. Nevertheless, the calf itself was of a ok size... a spring born creature raised up over the summer and fall on the rich grasses of plains.

Impulsively, Orson would be the burst to burn out of cover, loping easily through the grasses on his long legs. The calf would spot him and try to turn and flee, but the ranger put on a burst of speed and launched himself at the little rhino's flanks. Claws would sink in, maintaining a grasp even as he fell bodily to his side, his massive bulk dragged by the terrified animal. Orson experienced a moment of appreciation for the animal's great strength, even in such youth! If only they could all hunt the mother!

Orson gritted his teeth, digging in his claws and refusing to let go. Jaws gnashed, trying to get a grip on the leathery hide, trying to hold on until one of his hunting partners could arrive and get a more lethal grip on the fleeing calf...

"There's an easier path over here," came drawling voice of correction. Anniston pursed her lips and kept marking that trail, almost leaning harder into the motions as if out of spite.

"I'm no amateur; I can make my own," she called out with a cheeky grin. Nevermind that she was an amateur. Nevermind that she had definitely not seen the path the others wandered until it was pointed out to her. She lashed her tail with agitation and then settled in easily at the others' sides for the hunt, her mouth practically watering with the scent of rhinoceros hanging in the air. She did not even sneer when little Olive came and brushed against her shoulder with all the camaraderie they had once shared and Anniston could not quite allow herself to feel again – not yet. She looked stubbornly ahead.

She made lumbering and confident strides as they closed in on their target, a calf ultimately proving the most realistic option for the growing pride. As Orson gripped its hide, Anniston slid across the dusty plains to try and tackle its front end and ultimately aid in taking it down. Success.

"See? No amateur," she restated through a wheezing pant. Indeed, it was often tempting to forget that half of the pride had witnessed her in clumsy girlhood. Let them forget that Anniston. Let them remember her.
