RETURN OF THE MIST

There is an eeriness to the lands - an unknown chill that seemed to hang across the air, threatening to consume more than it already had. The shift is undeniable and, evidently, had already garnered its fair share of attention, as lions flocked in an attempt to rectify the disappearance of their kin.

Here, the fog seemed to thicken abruptly, occupying thr area as a swirling mass of white smoke and fading, hungry clouds. Listen close enough, however, and one may catch a sort of strange echo — indiscernible, mostly, other than the waning tremor that it left behind. There is almost no denying that there is someone in there, caught amongst the maze of wispy tendrils and omnipotent barriers.

And although the sound of approaching footfalls was beginning to grow louder, the question still remained - will they be able to find them?

The mist had returned to the Hollow, leaving Tobin in an uncharacteristically crabby mood. He disliked it being so close to home... er, IN their home actually. He'd been trying to patrol the borders to feel like he was still useful, but it seemed this mist was determined to stymy him.

Tobin sighed when he was blocked off once again, but this time he thought he heard something in the depths of the fog. He called out to it, as well as to the pride, wondering if someone would answer from the mist and wanting to warn the others that the mist had intruded again, if they hadn't already figured that out.

For so long, they had been searching outside of Obsidian for the missing members of their pride and family, but as Avana made her way through her own home, the strawberry lass was blocked by a sudden influx of mist into their caves. It was just like all the other times they had gone searching, but this was the first time she'd seen the tendrils of white infiltrate their tunnels. The belief that it would not invade their underground sanctuary disintegrated before her mismatched eyes as the pathfinder was faced with the swirling anomaly.

It was then that she heard @Tobin's call, seeming to fall into the same predicament wherever he was in the tunnels. Avana did her best to navigate the free space in order to find him among their corridors before finally finding the older male blocked off by the mist as well. "You okay?" she questioned as she came to his side, making sure to avoid his blindspot. Ears flicked forward at the sound of footfall within the mist, but the strawberry lass wasn't ready to get her hopes up once more. She'd simply join in on calling for the rest of their pride. Considering that they'd been attacked by the mist creatures before, Avana was keen to have more backup if they were faced with such a thing again.

He had been sticking close to home to begin with as the day neared when Faelyn might give birth. For her own sake, he hoped it would be soon. Her growing form just looked uncomfortable for such a small woman. With that thought, though, Roan also worried that it would cause complications. As such, he was more than ready for a little distraction as the calls of both Tobin and Avana reached his ears. What he found, though, was the last thing he wanted to see.

The mist had found its way inside their home. The initial worries over his wife were now heightened. What if it sought to take her away? Or even worse, what if it snatched up their children the moment they were born? Roan was already on the defense now as he came to his sister's free side. "Anything happen yet?" the king questioned them both without being able to take his eyes off the invasive mist. What would they encounter today?

There were plenty of distant cries within the mist if you were listening close enough. The sound of footfalls that seemed to be near but nothing ever showed up and no silhouette's came to. With @Tobin, @Avana and @Roan nearby it was easy to feel protected in the instance of something happening outside of the mist itself. Jafar kept a steady watch on those that were doing the searching as well as the mist itself. It had proven to be an unpredictable entity and it would do well if they all pretended it was alive and breathing and capable of almost anything. Thankfully his children had been obedient thus far and hadn't tampered with doing their own searching. However, there were things in there that might look to come out and take so it was best they keep their eye on the mess ahead of them.

They gather, finding some sort of unity and camaraderie beneath their common cause, bodies and minds working as once to try and find those that they had lost. The echo continues for a while longer, buzzing beneath the surface of the mist as if trying to break free — though it would find no avail. At least, not yet, anyways.

For it was abruptly that there was another shift, the air growing taunt as a small gust of wind pushed out across the landscape, demanding the attention of those present.

"anybody know where i can find some thimbleweed?" an unknown voice rang out, drawing attention to a lone, scrawny shape on the edge of the group. it was not apparent where he had come from, or even from which way he had materialized — but it was obvious that he was not one of them or of their pride. the question he posed, however, was a peculiar one “, given that thimbleweed was a poison with a bad reputation. the stranger knew this, of course, and suspected that (if any of them knew what it was) this inquiry might warrant him a few odd looks, if not a quick dismissal. there was no shame in trying though, right?

As soon as there was a noise to be had that rose over the rush of the mist around them, Jafar stood on edge with his lips peeled. Regarding the edge of the mysterious fog with unease as a figure stood before them and asked of a specific plant. One he knew not be of great medicinal value (for he had been healed plenty but never with thimbleweed) and thus his eyes squinted with great scrutiny. The Sovereign shook his head before looking to his team, did they know? Jafar wasn't all that familiar with plants nor was he familiar with anyone in the pride that was trained as a medic or familiar with the plant.

sharp, hooded eyes remained trained on the group, tongue clicking against the roof of his mouth upon realizing that they would not be able to assist in his searching. "no help…" he muttered lowly to himself, scrutinizing their silence and uncertainty, before the shadowy figure would aim to take his leave. maybe it was for the best that they did not know where the thimbleweed was — it meant more for him, should he ever manage to secure it, and also meant that they could not question his intentions for seeking it out. and so the rogue would depart to continue his search, sparing a final glance to the lions before slipping into the cover of the shadows and mist.

Today would not be the day that the small creature would gain any thimbleweed. At least not from them, but it wasn't for Jafar to concern himself over. It was an oddity that demanded something of them and he was in no position to give something over to a stranger when it hadn't offered anything in return. So it was much easier to simply ignore the question and the demander and continue forward with his search to locate at least one of their lost individuals. So far they hadn't been very luck and it was becoming quite a sore spot in his mind even if he didn't know any of the lions they looked for. exit jafar.

"I am," he said to Avana as she came to join him. He glanced to her with a slight smile as she joined him. "Figured I ought to warn everyone that it's back," he said.

Roan wasn't far either it seemed, and he shook his head in response to the question. "Not yet." It wasn't long before there was something, though.

Something came from the mist, but it wasn't a lion. They also asked for something that Tobin couldn't even conjure a mental picture of, not that it was too surprising for him not to know. Plants were far from his specialty. "No," he replied simply. Whether the creature was displeased with the response or not he didn't know, but at least it left, albeit with a cryptic message.

"That was helpful," he commented. "I'm going to walk the rest of the border and see if it is intruding anywhere else," he said, bidding his leave. He didn't want the mist to get too far into their territory without them being aware of it.
