Deep within Scarlett’s heart a fire began to spark. It was dull at first, but after time went on it continued to grow. And as the sun and moon moved through the skies, so did her hunger for something more. Soon, such a fire turned into a frenzied flame.

Tonight she will do something about it.

She couldn’t help but lick her lips, pearly teeth glistening underneath the full moon. Toxic green eyes glowed, the eyes of a viper scanning her home. Carefully she moved through the rainforest. Even though autumn had hit the lands of Amaryllis, Firnen was still warm and humid. Thankfully, she was well acclimated to such weather.

Scarlett found a clearing within the trees, allowing cool air to flow in. She stood for a moment, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath to calm her nerves.

Now, it was time to let the flame truly burn.

Scarlett let out a roar, a call to her fellow pridemates. She made her purpose known, she would challenge to gain the rank of gentry. She would fight for it, bleed for it. If someone wanted to fight her for it, so be it, she didn’t mind some friendly competition.

The rest could all watch and enjoy the show.

He had fought, and he had won. Had bled another and torn her face asunder while his own remained pure as fresh fallen snow. While his brother had failed. While his father and jarl had been partially blinded.

Suffice to say, he had a bit of a big head at the moment.

Whether or not that was entirely deserved remained to be seen, but at that moment he felt it was. And he was less than enthused that some woman, one he certainly hadn't seen at the war no less, wanted such a position within the pride. Not while he was around.

His birthday freshly behind him, now two years old and feeling fully certain of his abilities as they had just been proven, he made his way towards the woman with a feigned impassivity masking his [s]distaste[/i] dismay. He offered only the briefest of pauses for her to recognize him as her opponent and then he lunged, lashing out with his right front paw and attempting to sink his claws into the right side of her neck, up by her jaw.

For a moment, all was quiet within the rainforest. Her roar had silenced every living creature. Even the insects that were often loud and buzzing about in the dead of the night. She had let the rainforest know that an apex predator was near and that she was ready to spill blood.

She waited for an opponent to show.

And much to her delight, someone did. A younger lion, his fur pale. Her toxic eyes stared him down, but before she could say anything, he was already lunging at her.

Focus.

There was no more time to think, now was the time for action.

His claws were unnaturally long, and they easily sliced into the flesh on her neck. Blood splattered from the wound, and she could feel the white-hot pain that came with it.

She didn't want any of this to be personal, he was her pridemate after all... But she couldn't help but feel irritation and anger from the attack.

Scarlett would allow that anger to fuel her, to give her strength. With her right side injured, she would use her left forearm now. Quickly with dark claws unsheathed and shining under the moon, she attempted to strike her claws across the bridge of his nose with her left forepaw.

Always the face. He should have expected that by now. At least he was used to the sting of claws slicing into the tender skin, though his eyes still watered despite himself. It seemed to be an involuntary reaction, he thought absently. The last time he'd been hit like that the same thing had happened. He'd remember that.

Through a gaze now slightly hazy, he lashed out again with, attempting to close some of the distance between them and also trying to wrap his paw around her right knee. His jaws snapped at her face, not particularly trying to connect but he'd take it if he did. Mostly he just wanted to drive her back, especially if he could actually get the grip on her leg that he was aiming for.

Scarlett was not exactly the most seasoned warrior. She was much more skilled in spy work, but she understood that if she won this rank now, she would have much more responsibilities. That would include battle.

If she lost against such a young warrior, she would have some work cut out for her. She would have to train more and condition her body to get used to such an activity.

She wasn’t going to settle for anything less.

Her claws found their mark, and she couldn’t help but feel satisfied with herself. However the pale lion was quick to retaliate and quickly his arm wrapped around hers. His jaws flew at her face and she attempted to dodge, his teeth snagging her jaw in the process. Blood poured from the new wound, and she couldn’t help but growl in pain.

Hoping for a taste of revenge, Scarlett attempted to bite at her opponents face. She didn’t sim anywhere in particular, because she was distracted by the fact that his arm was still around her knee. That was an issue that she needed to take care of. She allowed her weight to shift, trying to fight the force of his paw with her arm.

Their numbers were small in the face of Gauthier’s reluctance to play the part of a benevolent ambassador, or his selective wants in the passage. In the months that stretched between tragedy, his demeanor had altered to one of ire; a looming dark that preceded any kindness. To know too much – to have lost too much, to look upon his children as the only flickering light and see only blood. In the resounding call for rank and power he’d grunted during his patrol of the borders and turned, favoring his healing wounds with a stunted step, toward the beacon.

Pleasantly surprised, he discovered his pale nephew and the crimson dash of Scarlett already engrossed in their private warfare. His eyes, momentarily eased, rose to the clear night sky and its audience. Among the deck of glistening star jewels, the gaze of the moon bore upon them with open delight. How fortuitous an evening to slake their indulgence; to take in such a time of fortune.

Smug, Gauthier settled on his haunches aside, watching each move with careful consideration.

Movement on the sidelines almost drew his attention, but he couldn't look away now. Not when her own teeth were lashing at his face and they caught his cheek and the side of his jaw, and once again he could taste his own blood. Clearly he had to get used to that if he was going to be fighting. Which was fine by him. Victory didn't come without a little sacrifice, it seemed, but that was okay so long as he won.

He could feel her trying to pull back and attempted to yank his paw forward, hoping to pull her off balance. He also shifted his weight towards his hind legs, daring to raise his other front paw off the ground so he could take a swipe at her shoulder opposite the side he was holding. He knew better than to leave himself off balance for too long, but the opportunity to attempt to sink his claws into her was too appealing to him not to. Not that it would show up much against her already red fur.

Fighting the albino lion was proving to be a nuisance, but she was ready to end this battle. He yanked at her paw, and quickly she unsheathed her claws and with a quick movement she attempted to take her claws down the his leg viciously. If he wanted to be wrapped up in her arms, then so be it.

She snarled when his claws dug into the flesh upon her shoulder, and with one last push she attempted to swipe her claws against his other forearm. Hopefully, she would leave his limbs wounded and stained in the crimson blood that coursed through his veins.

He grunted as her claws came down his leg, instantly staining his limb to match her coloration until it became difficult to tell where he ended and she began. Such was the price to pay for potential glory. It was the only exclamation he allowed himself even as she did the same to his other limb, because he refused to give her the satisfaction of knowing she'd hurt him. He didn't mind, though. Not really. It wasn't quite as bad as the wounds he'd received from the girl at the Lagoon. Did she think of him as he sometimes thought of her? He assumed so, since he'd left a reminder on her face.

No time to be distracted. He tucked his chin and jutted his head forward, attempting to hit her in the face. He wasn't sure how it was going to feel on his end if they slammed their skulls together, but he would find out in short order potentially.
