Her right paw lands where she wants it to: smack-dab on her sister's paw. Fortunately for faustine lazare is the lightest of their litter, her scrawny little frame refusing to fill out. Better that she does this attack, rather than one of their plumper sisters. Lazare isn't content in this, though; her toes spread wide as she attempts to slot her fingers into FAUSTINE's and <>squeeze. like holding hands, but with claws :)

Though she'd aimed for an ear, her teeth grapple against her sister's leg. She's clearly not too fussed, though; the moment her teeth scrap against flesh, she's pleased. More blood wells, coating her tongue in a way that's almost pleasant. At least, its a reminder of what she's here to do: to win their game.

Alas, her sister is not wholly without teeth ( or fangs, however she attacked lmao ). Faustine reaches forward, sinking into her own right foreleg. Blood pours from the wound, deep into the muscles there. Still A delighted little sound rumbles from lazare's mottled chest, a musical accompaniment to her sister's snarling growls.

She's noticing a trend with these calls.

Of course, this fights participants are... a little younger than she'd expected. The darker one is familiar, having found the girl lurking near her still-budding garden. Though what, exactly, they fought over is still unclear. Certainly not noble, as jean-claude had won that. Probably something important, though -- judging by the size of the small audience. Dainty paws carry her towards the noble, hoping to steal his attention to indulge her curiosity.

What do they fight for? She looks to @Jean-Claude as she speaks, though her quiet question is for any of them should they want to answer her. Preferably in the common tongue, though the lack of that seemed another trend. Her gaze shifts then, back to the fight as it seemingly was close to the end -- looking for the spots of blood and gore against soft cub fur. Her satchel sits heavy against her chest, slung as always around her neck. They might be young but that didn't mean their claws were any less sharp.

how nice, they were holding hands as they fought. faustine would have had a change of heart if not for the position that they were fighting for. no matter what or who, she would never allow herself to let go. if her sister wanted to sink her paw into hers in a mockery of a sweet gesture, then faustine would give that back as she attempted to sink and squeeze her claws into @Lazare's flesh. by doing so, faustine allowed her sister the chance to sink down further with her own nails. the current situation already felt like she was being stabbed by tiny needles of fire. faustine's paw was shaking by then, from pain and exertion.

faustine's leg was also feeling more of the pain as it rippled against her flesh. maybe it was her youth and her inexperience, but faustine was already so tired that her fangs were snapping at air. if there was an attempt at grabbing lazare again, then she wouldn't know. her stomach was growled but her limbs felt permanently stuck where they laid.

were they younger than she was, when she took the rank? louve could scarcely remember now, after so long, but they felt younger. perhaps it was only because it was her own flesh and blood, now, that she felt the instinctive sense that they were still so young.

they were not, of course. grown and possessing the viciousness of both parents, louve watched them with pride. her focus does not waver even with @Apollinaire's public affections, though a rumble stirs in her chest all the same.

it does not take long for one to fall -- they are hardly the experienced warmongers that their parents are -- and she recognizes the victor easily enough. while both had fought well it is "faustine" she calls to attention, her voice sharp enough to break through the cloud of battle, to urge them both apart. trusting that her husband will attend to dear @Lazare she focuses on the sister that stands victorious. "dis-moi, que feras-tu en tant qu'héritière ?" tell me, what would you do as heiress?

because she would not simply hand it over so easily.

faustine had to force herself to detach from lazare. the sheer hold they had over each other meant a painful separation for faustine. however, where there was pain there was also the rush of victory. her first real fight, with her sister no less, and she, faustine, had won. her chest was heaving, mind ablaze with the battle. her time here was not finished. @Louve called her, in the familiar way only a wolf would call to her children. faustine turned to fully face her mother, gaze attentive and jaws slackened. her front leg was in pain, but the bones were not as broken as she had thought.

maman she said, wishing to stand closer, but couldn't. j'apprendrai i will learn she said, looking from both louve to her father @Apollinaire and her grandmother @Amara. she could learn from all of them.

@Lazare was the last face she looked at before returning her gaze to louv. je protégerai mes frères et sœurs i will protect my siblings. her eyes shone, wicked and hungry. et une fois que je serai fort, je serai fier de moi. and once i'm strong, i will take a pride of my own she added. for dieudonne, for herself. she had never once thought about leaving the bluffs or any prides they may eventually reign. however, what else could faustine do to sow the powers of her family than to hold her own pride some day? peux-tu m'apprendre, maman? can you teach me, mom?

She does not win, but that's okay -- a grin still splits her features, eyes shining with delight. Their game was fun above all else, and that's all that matters. It's only when @Louve speaks that lazare even realizes others have come -- pale, unfocused eyes slide across them all. If that was strange, it doesn't ping; She blinks, owlishly, at louve's words -- not putting two and two together. To her, it hadn't been a challenge, just a game.

She laughs when faustine mentions having to protect her sister's from danger. Theres a small limp to her stride as she moves once against to her father's side but it doesn't seem to bother her, seemingly only to belatedly realize that she was injuried at all. She grins up at @Apollinaire, teeth still stained with blood, as she raises her injuried foreleg at him -- wiggling her toes to show him as blood splatters to the ground. She had lost here, oui, but there was no danger to be found. Not when everyone was pressed so close, drawn to watch their fight.

Although....

The conversation between her sister and mother feels serious. Strangely so. And it stretches out much further than usual. It's not uncommon for lazare to be out of the loop, but the irritation that springs from it certainly is. papa? que signifient-ils? (papa? what do they mean?) She asks her father, peering up at him. She loves her mother of course ( and the rest of her blood besides ) but it is her father who seemingly understands her -- or, at least, humors her the most. A rare spark of clarity shines in her eyes as her smile fades, just in time for her to realize what she has lost.

The duo battle it out fervently, dancing like two beautiful ballerinas in the middle of the bloodied arena. His eyes glimmer and gleam with anticipation. There is an itch to jump in, to share in on their dance, but he knows that this battle holds an important meaning.

Soon the victor is determined. "Faustine," Louve's voice commands attention. As the mother & daughter converse, Apollinaire's red gaze follows Lazare's approach. Oh, sweet Lazare - beaming from ear to ear as if she had no idea what she'd lost.

And then it dawns on him, that she really has no idea.

His expression doesn't shift. It is a perfectly crafted mask, a pleasant smile drawn on his lips. Even when @Faustine speaks of protecting her siblings, of taking a pride of her own... @Lazare simply grins a bloody grin. He glances back at the victorious girl, pleased for her undying ambition & her victory, then his eyes fall upon Lazare again. There is an overdone concern in his voice, brows pulling up as blood splatters on the ground from her wiggling toes. "Ma chérie, tu saignes de partout!" "My dear, you're bleeding everywhere!" He seeks to take her paw into his as if it caress it, inspecting it closely.

"Papa? What do they mean?" Sly eyes flicker from the bloodied appendage up to her face, irritation quickly settling upon his daughter's face. He straightens up, then, glancing back at the conversing @Louve & Faustine. When he peers back into Lazare's features, he finds all joy robbed. In it's stead there was an odd sense of clarity. Now she knew. "Oh, mon coeur chéri! C'est une journée joyeuse - votre sœur s'élève au rôle de fille-héritière," "Oh, my sweet heart! It is a joyus day - your sister is rising to the role of Daughter-Heir," he says with a celebratory tone.

@Faustine answers as louve would have expected. she did not presume to know all that was needed, and instead looks to her parents for guidance. to her grandmother.

louve waits until faustine looks solely at her, and then begins their lessons. "parfois le pouvoir est mieux tenu près," sometimes power is best held close, not an admonishment, but a warning, "par opposition à étiré mince." as opposed to stretched thin. while she would not discourage her daughter from seeking her own throne she would encourage her to not be too hasty.

stronger together, and all that.

"mais oui," she says later, after a moments pause, "je vais t'apprendre." a small nod, to confirm that title as faustine's, until one of her sisters decided to fight for the honor themselves. it was inevitable, she knew, for they were all dieudonne and they all wanted the power a woman deserved.

a look to her mother, to @Amara, to ensure she was not opposed. and then to @Apollinaire and @Lazare, wondering just how her other daughter was handling the loss.

oui, mama faustine said, feeling much more excited than usual. but in her youth and inexperience there was also a nervousness of the future. she now had much more power than that of a princess. knowing her sisters and the starving wolves still yet to rear their heads, faustine knew she must grip onto her seat until she was truly ready. not just her, but her siblings and their family. she would not rule alone, for the dieudonne would always be by her side. they were one.

a grin stretched across the young ghoul's face, accepting now the position of the heiress as hers. je ne laisserai pas tomber notre famille i will not let our family down she said, in that instinctive growl only a thing like her would make. she looked to her sister again, knowing all too well lazare may challenge again. then, she looked to her papa, then to her grandmother, and finally, her mother. then, with a flick of her tail and single nod of her head to everyone here, she leaves. [exit]
