she is far too eager for one so small — there is a burning in her chest as she woke within the early hours of the morning, stirred by some insatiable thrum, trembling against her bones. it wrestles her from the tendrils of sleep, forcing her hand as she rose from the warmth and comfort of her family, tiptoeing beyond the shadows of their cave in search of that deep, nagging feeling.

it led her through the maze of the hollows with ease, the stone floor cool and familiar beneath ebony paws, as her talons left little clicks behind in her wake. thankfully, however, it is not long until she reached a prominent wall of cologne and musk — the border, the one that her parents had pointedly told her and the others not to cross. it was not so much that voluspa did not want to listen, but rather that her soul screamed for her to venture further. conflicted, and locked in the weight of the moment, the young child finally relinquished control and dropped to her haunches with a defeated huff, shoulders slouching as she looked out towards the unobtainable world beyond. "what all was out there?"

For the briefest moment, Kaz and Van Eck sized each other up from across the bridge. Kaz couldn’t help but be reminded of when they’d faced each other this way seven days ago. He’d thought too much about that meeting. Late at night, when the day’s work was done, he’d lain awake, taking apart every moment of it. Again and again, Kaz thought of those few crucial seconds when he’d let his attention shift to Inej instead of keeping his eyes on Van Eck. It wasn’t a mistake he could afford to make again. That boy had betrayed his weakness in a single glance, had ceded the war for the sake of a single battle, and put Inej— all of them— in danger. He was a wounded animal who needed to be put down. And Kaz had done it gladly, choked the life from him without pause for regret. The Kaz that remained saw only the job: Free Inej. Make Van Eck pay. "The rest was just useless noise."
